What it does
Once installed, the agent can operate a command-line tool that talks to your running Obsidian app through its Local REST API plugin. It can list, read, create, overwrite, append to and delete notes, run plain-text or Dataview/JsonLogic searches across your vault, check or open the active note, and list or trigger Obsidian command palette actions. Output can be returned as structured JSON so the agent can parse results.
Great for
- People who keep their knowledge base in Obsidian and want an AI agent to help organise or search notes
- Developers building agent workflows that need to script Obsidian without opening the GUI
- Power users who want to batch-edit or query many notes from a terminal
Skip it if
- Users who do not have Obsidian running with the Local REST API plugin enabled, since the tool cannot work without it
- Situations where an agent should not delete or overwrite notes unattended, because the delete and update commands are destructive and the skill does not describe confirmation or backups
Try asking
- “List everything in my 'Daily Notes' folder and summarise last week's entries”
- “Search my vault for notes mentioning 'meeting notes' and make a table of their titles”
- “Append a new 'Action Items' section to Projects/new-project.md”
- “Find all notes where frontmatter status is active using a JsonLogic query”

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Set OBSIDIAN_API_KEY as an environment variable rather than passing the key on the command line, and run 'server status' first to confirm Obsidian is reachable
- Ask the agent to read and summarise before any update, append or delete, and keep a backup or version history of your vault
- Use the --json flag when you want the agent to parse output reliably
