What it does

This skill teaches an AI agent to control the FreeCAD parametric 3D modeling program through a command-line tool called cli-anything-freecad. Once installed, the agent can create and edit 3D parts, sketches, and drawings, run boolean and feature operations, and export models to formats such as STEP, STL, OBJ, DXF, PDF and glTF, all without opening the FreeCAD interface. It also describes preview image capture and motion video rendering.

Great for

  • Engineers or hobbyists who want an AI assistant to script repeatable FreeCAD modeling tasks
  • Developers building automated CAD pipelines that export STEP or STL files headlessly
  • Students learning parametric CAD who want step-by-step command examples

Skip it if

  • Users without FreeCAD installed, since freecadcmd must be on the PATH and the skill cannot work without it
  • Anyone expecting a graphical design experience, because the skill is command-line driven
  • Safety-critical engineering, since the file itself gives no validation that generated geometry is correct for manufacturing

Try asking

  • “Create a 20x15x5 mm box, cut a 6 mm cylinder from it, and export the result to STEP”
  • “Sketch a rectangle with a distance constraint, pad it 10 mm, then add a 2 mm fillet”
  • “Render a quick 4-view preview bundle of my project file”
  • “Export the current model to STL for 3D printing”
Step-by-step guide: how to use FreeCAD CLI HarnessInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    skills.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip skills.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip skills.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Use the --json flag so the agent receives machine-readable output
  • Keep a project file (-p proj.json) across commands so the model state persists between steps
  • Verify exported files visually or with the measure commands before using them for fabrication
