What it does
This skill teaches an AI agent how to use a command-line tool that talks to your own Firefly III personal finance app. Once installed, the agent can list accounts, record and search transactions, run expense and income reports, and export data, all by calling the tool with your Firefly III address and a personal access token. Destructive actions such as deleting accounts or transactions are also covered.
Great for
- People who self-host Firefly III and want an assistant to query or update their budget data
- Developers who script personal finance workflows and want structured JSON output
- Users who want monthly expense and income summaries generated automatically
Skip it if
- People without a running Firefly III instance, since the tool cannot do anything without one (it only connects to an existing server)
- Anyone uncomfortable giving an AI agent write access to financial records, since the skill includes create and delete commands that can change real data
- Shared or public machines, because the access token is passed through environment variables or command arguments that other users may be able to see
Try asking
- “Show me my asset account balances in Firefly III.”
- “Record a $15.50 lunch expense from my checking account in the Food category.”
- “Give me an expense report by category for January 2024.”
- “Search my transactions for anything containing 'grocery' and export them for March.”

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Set FIREFLY_III_BASE_URL and FIREFLY_III_PAT as environment variables rather than passing the token on the command line, and use a token with the narrowest access you can.
- Ask the agent to check the connection with info status first, and to list or get records before creating or deleting anything.
- Start with read-only requests such as reports and listings, and review any proposed create or delete commands before approving them.
