What it does

This skill loads a collection of reference documents and code snippets from Anthropic's Claude cookbooks into an AI agent. Once installed, when you ask about building with the Claude API, the agent can draw on examples for tool use, image analysis, prompt caching, retrieval (RAG), and agent patterns. It also includes a Python helper for a client-side memory feature that lets Claude read and write files in a sandboxed folder.

Great for

  • Developers learning to integrate the Claude API into their own apps
  • Engineers who want starter code for tool use, vision, or prompt caching
  • Teams building agent workflows who want a quick reference of patterns

Skip it if

  • Non-programmers who only want to chat with Claude (the skill mainly adds code examples, not new abilities); the examples assume Python and an API key
  • Production use without review: the snippets use placeholder keys and older model names such as claude-3-5-sonnet-20241022 that may be outdated

Try asking

  • “Show me how to add tool use with a weather function to my Claude app”
  • “Give me a Python example of sending an image to Claude for description”
  • “How do I set up prompt caching for a large system prompt?”
  • “Outline a customer service agent built with the Claude API and memory”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Claude Cookbooks ReferenceInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 11 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    claude-cookbooks.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip claude-cookbooks.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip claude-cookbooks.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Ask for a specific pattern (e.g. tool use or RAG) so the agent pulls the matching reference file
  • Check model names and API parameters against the official Anthropic docs before running code
  • Review scripts/memory_tool.py yourself before using it, since it reads and writes files on disk if you run it
