What it does

This is a prompt-style instruction file that tells an AI agent to act as a project manager and turn existing feature documents (a product requirements doc, technical breakdown, and implementation plan) into a structured GitHub project plan. The agent produces a project-plan.md with an overview, work item hierarchy (Epic, Feature, Story, Enabler, Test, Task), and a checklist of GitHub issue templates with labels, dependencies, and estimates. It is a planning template; the file does not itself create issues or connect to GitHub.

Great for

  • Engineering leads who already have PRD and technical design docs and want a ready-to-file issue breakdown
  • Teams using GitHub Issues and Projects who want consistent Epic/Feature/Story templates
  • Developers who want an agent to draft dependency and priority structure from existing planning documents

Skip it if

  • Projects without written feature documents, since the skill expects PRD and technical artifacts as input and the output will be generic or invented
  • Teams not using GitHub or using a different tracker, since the templates are GitHub-specific (issue numbers, labels, milestones)

Try asking

  • “Using the breakdown-plan prompt, create a project plan and issue checklist from my PRD and technical breakdown for the checkout feature”
  • “Break down this epic into features, user stories, enablers and test issues with dependencies and T-shirt estimates”
  • “Generate GitHub issue templates with acceptance criteria and labels for the new reporting feature”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    breakdown-plan.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip breakdown-plan.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip breakdown-plan.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Provide the actual PRD and technical breakdown files in context so the plan reflects real requirements rather than placeholders
  • Review the generated dependencies and estimates manually, since the agent infers them and may be wrong
  • Paste the generated issue text into GitHub yourself or use a separate tool; this skill does not file issues on its own
