What it does

This skill lets the agent set up automatic local copies of the claude-mem memory database, check whether they are running, and restore an older copy if needed. Once installed, when you ask to back up your memories or restore your database, the agent runs the claude-mem command-line tool, turns on a schedule in your settings file, and reports the snapshot count and last backup time. Snapshots stay on your own machine.

Great for

  • Users of claude-mem who do not want to lose stored memories after a bad change or corrupted file
  • People who want a simple way to roll back their memory database to an earlier point

Skip it if

  • Users who need off-machine or cloud backups, since snapshots are kept only locally
  • Anyone expecting a restore to be fully risk-free while cloud sync is on, because synced changes made after a snapshot may be pulled back in

Try asking

  • “Set up backups every 24 hours and keep the last 7 snapshots”
  • “Show my backup status and when the last snapshot ran”
  • “Restore my claude-mem database from the most recent backup”
  • “Take a backup of my memories right now”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Local Database BackupsInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    backup-setup.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip backup-setup.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip backup-setup.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Ask for status first to confirm whether your installed claude-mem version supports backups before enabling them
  • Keep the pre-restore copy the skill creates until you have confirmed the restored database works, since it is your undo option
  • Expect the first automatic snapshot about five minutes after the worker starts; use the run command to take one immediately
