What it does

Once installed, the agent knows how to manage Azure DevOps (Microsoft's hosted software development platform) through the Azure command-line tool and its DevOps extension. It can list and create pull requests, check and trigger pipeline runs, query and update work items, manage variable groups and agent pools, and look up project settings. It uses short reference guides for each area so it reads only the command syntax it needs.

Great for

  • Developers who already use Azure DevOps and want the agent to script routine repo or pipeline tasks
  • Platform or release engineers automating CI/CD housekeeping
  • Teams who want quick command syntax for az devops, az pipelines, az boards and az repos

Skip it if

  • People who do not use Azure DevOps; the commands will not apply to GitHub or other platforms
  • Running it against production organisations without review, since commands can change pipelines, permissions and service connections
  • Anyone unwilling to store a Personal Access Token in the terminal, because login relies on a PAT that grants whatever rights it was given

Try asking

  • “Create a pull request from my current branch to main and add two reviewers”
  • “List failed pipeline runs from the last 24 hours in project Payments”
  • “Create a work item for this bug and assign it to the current sprint iteration”
  • “Add a variable group with these settings for the staging pipeline”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Azure DevOps CLIInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 9 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    azure-devops-cli.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip azure-devops-cli.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip azure-devops-cli.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Set default organization and project with az devops configure so commands stay short and you avoid repeating them
  • Use a PAT with the narrowest scopes and short expiry, and never paste it into shared chats or committed files
  • Ask the agent to show the command first and confirm before it runs anything that creates, deletes or changes permissions
