What it does

When installed, the agent helps you connect your web app to Azure Application Insights, Microsoft's monitoring service, so you can see how healthy the app is (requests, errors, performance). It first works out your app's language, framework and hosting, then either guides auto-instrumentation for ASP.NET Core apps on Azure App Service or creates an App Insights resource and edits your code for Node.js, Python or ASP.NET Core apps. The skill itself only contains instructions and reference guides; the agent does the work in your project.

Great for

  • Developers with a Node.js, Python or ASP.NET Core web app who want Azure monitoring
  • Teams already using Azure App Service, Container Apps or Bicep templates who want telemetry added consistently

Skip it if

  • Apps hosted outside Azure or in other languages, since the prerequisites only cover ASP.NET Core and Node.js hosted in Azure (the Python guide is included but the prerequisite list does not mention Python)
  • Anyone who cannot create or pay for Azure resources, because the workflow requires an Azure subscription and creating an App Insights resource; running it against production without review could also change live app code and incur costs

Try asking

  • “Add Application Insights telemetry to my Node.js Express app hosted in Azure Container Apps”
  • “Instrument my ASP.NET Core app on Azure App Service with monitoring”
  • “Help me set up App Insights for my Python Flask app and update the code”
  • “Create an App Insights resource in my existing Bicep template and wire it into my web app”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 6 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    appinsights-instrumentation.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip appinsights-instrumentation.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip appinsights-instrumentation.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Tell the agent your hosting environment up front (App Service, Container App, local machine), since it is required to ask.
  • Review the proposed Azure CLI commands and code edits before running them, especially for production resource groups.
  • Use a resource group that already holds your app's resources so the monitoring resource is easy to manage.
