AI Ready Repo Setup
Installs a separate upstream skill that prepares a repo for AI coding agents

What it does
This is a small wrapper, not the full tool. It tells you how to install the ai-ready skill from its original author, John Papa, into GitHub Copilot CLI. Once that separate skill is installed, asking the agent to make a repo "AI-ready" lets it analyze your codebase and generate agent instruction files (such as AGENTS.md and copilot-instructions.md), CI workflows, and issue templates tailored to your stack.
Great for
- Maintainers of a repository who want to add AI agent configuration files without writing them by hand
- Developers using GitHub Copilot CLI who want to try the upstream ai-ready skill
Skip it if
- Anyone expecting this file alone to do the setup: it only gives install instructions, and the real logic lives in johnpapa/ai-ready, which was not reviewed here
- Users who want to run the install automatically: the file explicitly says the user must run the install command themselves, and the downloaded skill's contents should be inspected before use since it may generate workflows and config that run in your project
Try asking
- “Make this repo ai-ready”
- “Set up AI config for this project”
- “Prepare this repo for AI contributions”
Install in 3 steps

Add it to your agent
Claude Code (all projects)
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip ai-ready.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Inspect the downloaded SKILL.md (for example with head -20 on the installed path) before loading it, as the file recommends
- Review any generated CI workflows and config files before committing them to your repository
