How to use the Writing in Your Voice agent skill

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

The Writing skill is an agent skill for LifeOS that lets an AI agent write or revise text so it matches a voice model built from your own past writing, audit drafts for common AI-writing patterns, and organize rough dictated notes into readable prose. It is written for people who already have a body of their own writing and want drafts that sound like it. This guide explains what an agent skill is, how to install this one, how to trigger it with ordinary requests, what it needs to run, and where its limits are.

Writing in Your Voicedanielmiessler/LifeOS · MIT

Quick start

  1. 1Download the ZIP. Download the Writing skill ZIP from the skill's page on this site.
  2. 2Unzip into a skills folder. Unzip into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder. You can also upload it in the Claude apps under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
  3. 3Install Bun and LifeOS prerequisites. Make sure the Bun runtime is available and that your LifeOS install provides ContextLoad.ts and the Assay judge tool.
  4. 4Configure your voice directory. Follow Setup.md to set voice_dir and confirm Corpus.md, Exemplars.md, PostExemplars.md, VoiceProfile.md and VoiceProfile.json exist.
  5. 5Check the configuration. Run bun Tools/WritingConfig.ts status to see which settings are in place.
  6. 6Make a request. Ask in plain language, such as "remove AI-isms from this draft" or "write this in my voice".
  7. 7Add the Pangram key if you want scores. Set PANGRAM_API_KEY only if you plan to use ScoreAI. Scores are signals with caveats, not pass or fail results.

What is an agent skill, and what does the Writing skill do?

An agent skill is a folder of instructions and tools that an AI agent loads when a request matches the skill's purpose. The Writing skill covers six kinds of work: rewriting text to remove AI-isms, auditing text and flagging patterns without rewriting, scoring text with the Pangram AI-detection service, writing new text as you, assembling transcripts or dictated notes into prose, and previewing a draft as a rendered page.

The skill routes each request to one of these intents. It checks results with measurement scripts that compare drafts against your voice corpus, so a claim that a draft sounds like you is backed by a measurement rather than a guess.

Install the Writing skill

You can install the skill in one of two ways. Download the ZIP from the skill's page on this site and unzip it into your personal skills folder, ~/.claude/skills/, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder if you want it limited to one project.

Alternatively, in the Claude apps, open Settings, go to Capabilities, and upload the skill under Skills.

  • Personal install: unzip into ~/.claude/skills/
  • Project install: unzip into the project's .claude/skills/
  • Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload

Set up your voice corpus before you expect voice results

The voice checks depend on a voice directory of your own writing. The directory holds Corpus.md, Exemplars.md, PostExemplars.md, VoiceProfile.md and VoiceProfile.json. Setup is described in the skill's Setup.md file, which covers config keys, the voice_dir files, secrets and a proof run.

This step matters. Without a configured voice corpus, the gate and judge scripts stop with exit code 2 and the voice checks cannot run. The skill does not pass these checks silently, so you will see the failure and know to finish setup.

  • Point the skill config at your voice_dir
  • Confirm the five voice files are present
  • Run bun Tools/WritingConfig.ts status to see what is configured
bun Tools/WritingConfig.ts status

Trigger the skill with natural requests

You do not need special syntax. The skill responds to plain requests. For rewriting, say things like "remove AI-isms", "clean up AI writing" or "make this sound less like AI". For writing new text, say "write this in my voice" or "this doesn't sound like me". For dictated material, say "assemble this transcript" or "shape these dictated notes".

For auditing, say "audit writing" or "just flag" if you want a report without changes. For scoring, say "pangram" or "AI detection score". To see a finished draft as a reader would, say "preview the article" or "show me the draft".

  • "deai this draft" starts a rewrite with a minimal-diff edit and a second-pass audit
  • "write the intro to this post as me" starts a voice-anchored draft
  • "just flag" returns a tiered report of flagged patterns without changing the text
  • "open the draft properly" renders the draft as a page and opens it in your browser

Examples of what you get back

A rewrite request returns the detected voice profile, the findings listed by severity, a minimal-diff rewrite and a clean second-pass audit. A voice-anchored authoring request returns a draft along with the VoiceGate and VoiceJudge exit codes and a reported Pangram score, if you ran ScoreAI.

Assembly requests keep the speaker's actual words. The skill removes fillers and duplicate passages only when removal does not change meaning, and it reports any unresolved gaps instead of filling them with invented content.

Requirements and safety notes

The skill needs the Bun runtime to run its TypeScript tools, a LifeOS install that provides ContextLoad.ts and the Assay judge tool, and the voice directory described above. The PANGRAM_API_KEY environment variable is needed only for ScoreAI scoring.

The skill runs scripts and uses the network. Scoring sends text to the Pangram AI-detection service, which is optional and only happens when you ask for a score. Review the scripts before installing if you need to control what runs on your machine.

  • Bun runtime is required
  • PANGRAM_API_KEY is needed only for ScoreAI
  • Scripts run locally and the skill uses the network
  • Without a voice corpus, voice checks stop with exit code 2

What people use it for

  • Rewriting a draft from an AI tool so it removes telltale phrasing while keeping the original facts and meaning
  • Turning a dictated voice memo or meeting transcript into readable prose without losing the speaker's wording
  • Drafting an introduction or section in your own voice, checked against your past writing
  • Running a tiered audit of a published post to see which AI-associated patterns it contains
  • Previewing a finished draft as a rendered page with headings, lists and live links

Frequently asked questions

How do I install the Writing agent skill?

Download the ZIP from the skill's page on this site and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use or a project's .claude/skills/ folder. In the Claude apps, you can instead upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

What does the Writing skill require to run?

It requires the Bun runtime, a LifeOS install that provides ContextLoad.ts and the Assay judge tool, and a voice directory with Corpus.md, Exemplars.md, PostExemplars.md and VoiceProfile files configured through Setup.md. The PANGRAM_API_KEY variable is needed only for ScoreAI scoring.

Is the Writing skill free to use?

The skill is published under the MIT licence. This page does not list prices, so check the skill's page on this site for any cost details.

Why do the voice checks fail with exit code 2?

The gate and judge scripts stop with exit code 2 when no voice configuration exists. Finish the setup in Setup.md, point voice_dir at your files, and run bun Tools/WritingConfig.ts status to confirm.

Can the Writing skill just detect AI writing without rewriting?

Yes. Say "just flag" or "audit only" to get a tiered report without changes. If you only need detection, the skill points you to the separate DetectAI skill, and fiction goes to WriteStory.

Does the Writing skill send my text anywhere?

Only when you ask for a Pangram score. ScoreAI sends text to the Pangram AI-detection service and needs PANGRAM_API_KEY. Other intents work from local files and scripts.

Our verdict

Use the Writing skill if you have a solid body of your own writing and want drafts, rewrites or organized transcripts that stay close to your voice and your source material. Pick something else if you need standalone AI detection, fiction, social posts, or if you have no voice corpus to configure, since the voice checks cannot run without one.
