How to use the Teltonika RMS device manager agent skill

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

The Teltonika RMS device manager skill teaches an AI agent to operate the cli-anything-rms command-line tool, which talks to the Teltonika RMS REST API to manage routers, gateways and IoT devices. This guide is for people who already run Teltonika devices through RMS and want an agent to query or change them. By the end you will know what the skill does, how to install it, how to authenticate, and how to make safe requests.

Quick start

  1. 1Get an RMS API token. Sign in to your Teltonika RMS account and obtain an API token. The skill cannot work without one.
  2. 2Install Python and the package. Make sure Python with pip is available, then install the cli-anything-rms package from the HKUDS CLI-Anything repository on GitHub.
  3. 3Install the skill files. Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ or a project's .claude/skills/ folder, or upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills in the Claude apps.
  4. 4Set your API token. Set the RMS_API_TOKEN environment variable or run cli-anything-rms config set api_token with your token.
  5. 5Test the connection. Run auth test to confirm the RMS REST API is reachable and the token is accepted.
  6. 6Ask a read-only question. Request a device list or alert check in plain language to confirm the agent is using the skill.
  7. 7Review any write action. Before approving a create, update or delete, confirm the target device or record ID to avoid changing live systems by mistake.

What is an agent skill and what does this one do?

An agent skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file that gives an AI agent instructions for a specific tool. This skill covers the Teltonika RMS (Remote Management System) cloud service, which manages industrial routers, gateways and IoT devices.

Once installed, the agent can list devices, check their status and location, review alerts and logs, and manage users, companies, tags, SMTP settings, remote access sessions and reports. It does this by running cli-anything-rms commands against the RMS REST API. Many of these commands create, update or delete live records.

  • Devices: list, get details, update name or tag, delete
  • Alerts and logs: list, get, and manage alert configurations
  • Location: current device location and location history
  • Remote access, hotspots, configs, reports, files, SMTP and credits
  • Auth and config: test connectivity and manage the API token

Install the Teltonika RMS skill

Download the skill ZIP from this page and unzip it into one of two locations. Use ~/.claude/skills/ to make the skill available across your projects, or use a project's .claude/skills/ folder to limit it to that project.

Alternatively, upload the ZIP in the Claude apps under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

The skill also needs the command-line package. The source installs it with pip from GitHub. Python with pip is required.

  • Option 1: unzip into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use
  • Option 2: unzip into a project's .claude/skills/ folder
  • Option 3: upload the ZIP under Settings → Capabilities → Skills in the Claude apps
pip install git+https://github.com/HKUDS/CLI-Anything.git#subdirectory=rms/agent-harness

Set up authentication with your API token

The tool needs your RMS API token. You can provide it in one of two ways. Setting the RMS_API_TOKEN environment variable works, and so does saving it in the tool's configuration with the config set command.

Treat the token carefully. It grants account-level access, so do not paste it into shared agent sessions or into logs.

  • Environment variable: set RMS_API_TOKEN
  • Configuration: store it with config set api_token
  • Check where config is kept with config path
cli-anything-rms config set api_token <token>

Check the connection before you ask for changes

Run the connectivity and auth commands first. They confirm the token works and that the RMS REST API is reachable from your machine. If these fail, no other command will succeed because every request requires authentication.

Once the checks pass, start with read-only requests such as listing devices or checking alerts.

cli-anything-rms auth test cli-anything-rms auth status

Ask for what you need in plain language

You do not need to memorise the command list. Describe the outcome you want, such as checking which routers are offline or pulling recent alerts for one device, and the agent will choose the matching cli-anything-rms command. Name the device ID or tag where you can, because the commands filter on device IDs, tags and status.

For direct use, the tool also supports a JSON output flag and an interactive mode. Read-only listing and get commands are the safest starting point.

  • Show all online devices
  • Get the details of device 12345 as JSON
  • Check alerts for device 12345
  • Show the location history for a device, limited to 20 entries
cli-anything-rms devices list --status online cli-anything-rms --json devices get 12345 cli-anything-rms alerts list --device 12345 cli-anything-rms

Review changes before the agent runs them

Commands that change data are where mistakes cost you. Devices delete, users delete, passwords update and remote-access create all change live systems, and can cause outages or lockouts. Review each proposed write command before you approve it.

For password changes, the source offers a stdin option that reads the password from standard input, which it describes as safer than passing it on the command line.

  • Read before you write: confirm the target ID with a get or list command first
  • Be cautious with delete commands on devices, users, tags and companies
  • Use the stdin option for passwords rather than typing them into a command
  • Do not run this against production fleets without review

What people use it for

  • Asking the agent which devices are offline and summarising the list for a status report
  • Pulling recent alerts for one router to help diagnose a fault
  • Checking the current location and location history of a fleet vehicle's gateway
  • Reviewing device logs before a maintenance window
  • Generating a report from an RMS report template

Frequently asked questions

How do I install the Teltonika RMS agent skill?

Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ or a project's .claude/skills/ folder. You can also upload the ZIP in the Claude apps under Settings → Capabilities → Skills. The command-line package is installed separately with pip from the HKUDS CLI-Anything GitHub repository.

What do I need to use cli-anything-rms?

You need Python with pip, a Teltonika RMS account, an RMS API token, and network access to the RMS REST API. Without an account and token, nothing works because every command requires authentication.

Is the Teltonika RMS skill free?

The source material does not state pricing or licence terms for the skill itself. The repository it installs from is listed under the Apache-2.0 licence on this page, but check the repository for full licence details. Your RMS account and its API access are separate from the skill.

Where do I put my RMS API token?

Set the RMS_API_TOKEN environment variable, or run cli-anything-rms config set api_token with your token. Run cli-anything-rms config path to see where the configuration file is stored.

Can the agent delete devices or change passwords?

Yes. Commands such as devices delete, users delete, passwords update and remote-access create can change live systems. Review each write action before approving it, and use the stdin option for passwords.

Can this skill manage non-Teltonika devices?

No. The skill is built for Teltonika RMS and manages Teltonika routers, gateways and IoT devices through the RMS REST API. It cannot manage other equipment.

Our verdict

This skill suits IT or fleet administrators who already use Teltonika RMS and want an agent to summarise device status, pull alert and location history, or script around RMS data. It is a poor fit for anyone without an RMS account and API token, or for anyone who wants to make unreviewed changes on a production fleet.
