How to use the Teltonika RMS Device CLI agent skill

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

The cli-anything-rms skill teaches an AI agent to run a command-line tool that talks to Teltonika's Remote Management System (RMS), a cloud service for managing routers, gateways and IoT devices. This guide is for network administrators, IoT operators and developers who want an agent to check device status, alerts, locations and logs in plain language. After reading it you will know how to install the skill, supply your API token, trigger it with natural requests and use it safely.

Teltonika RMS Device CLIHKUDS/CLI-Anything · Apache-2.0

Quick start

  1. 1Install Python and pip. Make sure Python with pip is available on your machine, since the CLI is installed with pip.
  2. 2Install the CLI package. Run the pip install command from GitHub to add the cli-anything-rms package.
  3. 3Install the skill folder. Download the skill ZIP from the item page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ or a project's .claude/skills/ folder, or upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
  4. 4Add your API token. Set the RMS_API_TOKEN environment variable or run cli-anything-rms config set api_token with your token.
  5. 5Test the connection. Run auth test to confirm the tool can reach the RMS REST API, and auth status to see the current auth info.
  6. 6Ask for what you need. Request device status, alerts or locations in plain language, naming the device ID or status where you know it.

What is an agent skill and what does this one do?

An agent skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file that tells an AI agent when and how to use a tool. This skill is documented in a single file, SKILL.md, and it wraps a CLI harness for the Teltonika RMS REST API.

Once installed, the agent can list and inspect devices, check alerts and locations, view logs, and manage users, companies, tags, configurations and reports. It can also create or delete records by running commands on your behalf. Every action goes over the internet to the RMS REST API using your access token.

  • Devices: list, get, update and delete devices, with filters for status and tag
  • Alerts and alert configurations, plus alert log entries
  • Location: current device location and location history
  • Logs, configs, remote-access sessions, hotspots, reports and SMTP configs
  • Users, companies and tags management

Install the cli-anything-rms skill

You need Python with pip. The CLI itself is installed from GitHub with pip, using the command below from the source file.

To add the skill to the agent, download the ZIP from the item page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for your user, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder for one project. Alternatively, in the Claude apps, open Settings → Capabilities → Skills and upload the ZIP there.

  • Install Python and pip on your machine
  • Run the pip command shown below to install the cli-anything-rms package
  • Download the skill ZIP from the item page and unzip it to ~/.claude/skills/ or a project's .claude/skills/
  • Or upload the ZIP under Settings → Capabilities → Skills in the Claude apps
pip install git+https://github.com/HKUDS/CLI-Anything.git#subdirectory=rms/agent-harness

Set your RMS API token

The tool cannot do anything without a Teltonika RMS API token. You can provide it in one of two ways: as the RMS_API_TOKEN environment variable, or by saving it with the config command. Check the saved settings with config get, and find the config file location with config path.

Keep the token private. Anyone with it can act on your RMS account through this tool.

  • Option 1: set the RMS_API_TOKEN environment variable
  • Option 2: run config set api_token with your token
  • Confirm with auth test (connectivity) and auth status (current auth info)
cli-anything-rms config set api_token <token>

Trigger the skill with natural requests

You do not need to type commands yourself. Ask the agent in plain language about your RMS devices, alerts or locations, and it should choose the matching command group. Be specific about the device ID, status or limit when you know them, since the commands accept those as filters and arguments.

The skill's description is short, so mention Teltonika RMS or your device names to make it clear which system you mean.

  • "Which Teltonika routers are online right now?" maps to devices list with status online
  • "Show me the alerts for device 12345" maps to alerts list with a device filter
  • "Where was device 12345 last, and what was its location history?" maps to location get and location history
  • "Give me the last 20 logs for device 12345" maps to logs list with a device filter and limit

Run commands yourself

You can also call the CLI directly. The source shows JSON output with the --json flag and an interactive mode when you run the command with no arguments.

  • Use --json before the command for machine-readable output
cli-anything-rms devices list --status online cli-anything-rms --json devices get 12345 cli-anything-rms alerts list --device 12345 cli-anything-rms

Safety notes before letting an agent act

This skill runs scripts and uses the network. Many commands change data: delete commands remove devices, users, companies, tags, alerts, logs, files and reports, and update commands can change configurations and passwords. The skill file does not describe a confirmation step before these actions, so review requests before the agent runs them.

When setting a device password, the source notes that passwords update --password-stdin reads from stdin and is safer than passing the password as an argument. Prefer read-only requests such as list and get when you are only checking status.

  • Start with read-only commands: list, get, history and auth test
  • Confirm device IDs before any delete or update
  • Prefer passwords update with --password-stdin over --password
  • Use a token with the least access you need, and keep it out of shared files

What people use it for

  • Checking which routers or gateways are online or offline before a site visit
  • Reviewing recent alerts for a specific device or fleet
  • Pulling location history for a tracked IoT device
  • Exporting device details as JSON for a script or report
  • Listing users, companies and tags to audit access in RMS

Frequently asked questions

What is the cli-anything-rms skill?

It is an agent skill from the HKUDS/CLI-Anything project that teaches an AI agent to operate a command-line tool for Teltonika's Remote Management System. The agent uses it to manage routers, gateways and IoT devices through the RMS REST API.

What do I need to use it?

You need Python with pip to install the cli-anything-rms package from GitHub, a Teltonika RMS API token, and internet access to the RMS REST API. Without a token the tool cannot do anything.

How do I install the skill?

Run the pip install command for the package, then download the skill ZIP from the item page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ or a project's .claude/skills/ folder. You can also upload the ZIP under Settings → Capabilities → Skills in the Claude apps.

Is cli-anything-rms free?

The skill is listed under the Apache-2.0 licence. Teltonika RMS itself is a separate service that requires your own account and API token, so check your RMS account terms for any costs.

How do I fix a token or connection error?

Run cli-anything-rms auth test to check connectivity and auth status to see the current auth info. Confirm your token is set through RMS_API_TOKEN or config set api_token, and check config get to see what is stored.

Can the agent change or delete things in my RMS account?

Yes. The skill includes delete commands for devices, users, companies, tags, alerts, logs, files, reports and more, plus update commands for configurations and passwords. The skill file does not describe a confirmation step, so restrict the token and review requests first.

Our verdict

Use this skill if you manage Teltonika routers or IoT devices through RMS and want an agent to answer status, alert and location questions quickly, or if you are building automations around RMS data. Skip it if you have no RMS account or token, or if you need an agent that will not change production settings without a manual confirmation step.
