How to use the Session Recap agent skill (recap)
Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data
The recap skill is a small instruction package for an AI coding agent. When you ask for a summary of recent work, it looks up your past sessions for the current project in an agent memory store and lists them by date, with a count of observations and highlight notes for each session. This guide explains what the skill does, how to install it, how to ask for it, and where it can fail, so you can get a reliable rollup of your project history.
Quick start
- 1Download the ZIP. Download the recap skill ZIP from this page.
- 2Unzip into a skills folder. Unzip into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or into the project's .claude/skills/ folder for one project.
- 3Or upload in the Claude apps. In the Claude apps, go to Settings → Capabilities → Skills and upload the ZIP.
- 4Confirm the memory tools. Make sure memory_sessions and memory_recall are available from the agentmemory plugin.
- 5Ask for a recap. Say something like "recap this week" or "what have we been doing today".
- 6Review the dated list. Check the sessions, highlights and totals line against what you expect.
What the recap skill makes the agent do
The skill summarizes the last N agent sessions for the current project. Sessions are grouped by date, and each session shows a short id, its title or first prompt, its observation count, and its status, followed by highlight observations.
The skill is built to report only what the memory tools return. If the time window has no sessions, the agent should say so rather than write a summary from memory of the conversation. The skill depends on the agentmemory plugin's memory tools being available.
- Accepts a window argument: today, this week, last N, or empty (defaults to last 10).
- Lists sessions by local calendar date, newest first.
- Pulls highlights with the memory_recall tool and ends with a totals line.
Install the recap skill
Download the recap skill ZIP from this page. Then choose one of the two install routes below.
For a personal install, unzip the package into ~/.claude/skills/. For a single project, unzip it into the project's .claude/skills/ folder. You can also upload the ZIP in the Claude apps under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
- Personal: ~/.claude/skills/ (available across your projects).
- Project: .claude/skills/ inside the project folder (available to that project).
- Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload the ZIP.
Check that the memory tools are available
The skill cannot retrieve anything without two tools from the agentmemory plugin: memory_sessions and memory_recall. Before you rely on the skill, confirm that your agent can see them.
In Claude Code, the troubleshooting guide suggests inspecting /plugin list and /mcp. If the tools are missing, follow the steps in the bundled TROUBLESHOOTING.md file.
- Check for memory_sessions and memory_recall in your agent's tool list.
- Recorded agent sessions must already exist in the memory store for the project.
How to trigger the recap skill with natural requests
You do not need a special command. The skill is meant to activate when you ask for a recap, for example "recap", "what have we been doing", "today", "this week", or a rollup of recent work. You can also pass an argument such as today, this week, or last 5.
The skill's own quick start shows the underlying calls: memory_sessions with your project identifier and a limit of 30, then memory_recall per surviving session with a limit of 3.
- "Recap this week."
- "What have we been doing today?"
- "Give me a recap of the last 5 sessions."
memory_sessions { "project": "<current-project-id>", "limit": 30 }Read the output and an example
The bundled examples show the window being applied to the project's sessions, then highlights being pulled for each one. The output groups sessions under their date. Each session line shows the first eight characters of its id, the title, observation count, and status. Highlights are indented beneath it, and a final line gives the totals.
If there is nothing in the window, the expected answer is a plain statement that no sessions were found, not a generated summary.
- Session lines show id (first 8 characters), title, observation count and status.
- The closing line reads: N sessions across M days, K observations.

This skill does not run scripts and does not use the network, according to its listing. It reads session data through the memory tools that your agent already has. Because it only reports tool results, its output is only as complete as what was recorded.
Sessions are filtered to the current project's working directory. If the project identifier is unknown, the skill matches directory paths across result pages before applying the time window.
- Runs scripts: no.
- Uses network: no.
- Reads only through memory_sessions and memory_recall.
- Summaries cover only work that was recorded in memory.
What people use it for
- Starting your day by asking what was done on the project yesterday and today.
- Returning to a project after a break to get a dated list of past sessions.
- Checking how many sessions and observations exist for a project in a given week.
- Giving a teammate a quick list of recorded work on a project.
Frequently asked questions
How do I install the recap agent skill?
Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder. You can also upload the ZIP in the Claude apps under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
What does the recap skill require?
It needs the agentmemory plugin providing the memory_sessions and memory_recall tools, and recorded agent sessions in the memory store for your project. Without those tools it cannot retrieve any sessions.
Is the recap skill free to use?
The listing states the licence as Apache-2.0. The page does not list a price, so check the licence text for the terms that apply.
Why does recap say there are no sessions?
The skill reports only what the memory tools return. If the time window has no recorded sessions for the project, it says so instead of inventing activity. Check that the agentmemory tools are connected, as described in the bundled troubleshooting file.
Does the recap skill run scripts or use the internet?
According to the listing, it runs no scripts and uses no network. It reads session data through the memory tools that your agent already has.
How is recap different from handoff or recall?
The skill's own notes say handoff, session-history and recall use the same session data through a different lens. Recap focuses on a dated rollup of recent work for the current project.

Our verdict
Use the recap skill if you already use agentmemory and want a quick, dated rollup of what was done on a project today or this week. Skip it if you do not have the agentmemory memory tools installed, or if you need a summary of work that was never recorded, because the skill will deliberately return empty results in those cases.
