How to use the Registry Browser agent skill
Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data
The Registry Browser is an agent skill that searches a list of saved online skill registries for skills matching a keyword, then shows you what it found. This guide explains what an agent skill is, how to install registry-browser, how to ask for it in plain language, and what to watch for before you add new sources. By the end you will be able to search your watched registries, read the full instructions of any match, and decide for yourself what to install.
Quick start
- 1Download the ZIP. Download the registry-browser ZIP from this page.
- 2Unzip the skill. Unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or into the .claude/skills/ folder of a project.
- 3Or upload it in Claude. In the Claude apps, go to Settings → Capabilities → Skills and upload the ZIP instead.
- 4Check your watched registries. Confirm your CLAUDE.md file lists the registries you want to search, starting with lpm-skills.
- 5Search with a natural request. Ask the agent to browse or search skills for a topic, or run /registry-browser with a query.
- 6Preview before installing. Ask to view the full SKILL.md of any match and read it before deciding to install.
What the Registry Browser skill does
An agent skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md instructions file that tells an AI agent how to do a specific task. The Registry Browser skill gives your agent a way to shop for other skills. You give it a search term, and it checks each watched registry (a collection of skill folders, such as a GitHub repository) and matches the term against skill names and descriptions.
It does not install anything. It browses and previews. A separate installer skill, called skill-installer, handles installation.
- Searches only the registries on your watchlist, plus any you add
- Matches keywords against skill names and descriptions
- Shows the full SKILL.md of any match so you can read it first
- Does not rate or review skills; that judgement stays with you
Install the registry-browser skill
You can install the skill from a ZIP file downloaded from this page. Choose one of the locations below, depending on whether you want it available everywhere or only in one project.
The skill runs in Claude Code or a compatible agent that can access your ~/.claude plugin config folder.
- Personal install: download the ZIP, unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/
- Project install: download the ZIP, unzip it into the .claude/skills/ folder of your project
- Claude apps: upload the ZIP under Settings → Capabilities → Skills
~/.claude/skills/Set up your watched registries
The skill reads its list of watched registries from a CLAUDE.md file in your plugin config folder. The skill ships with one default registry, lpm-skills, which contains legal project management skills and is practice-agnostic, so it works as a starting point.
The skill also looks for a local cache file, references/registry-cache.json, so repeated browsing is faster. It refreshes the cache if it is more than seven days old, or when you ask it to.
- Watched registries file: ~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/legal-builder-hub/CLAUDE.md
- Default registry: lpm-skills
- Cache file: references/registry-cache.json
~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/legal-builder-hub/CLAUDE.mdTrigger the skill with natural requests
You do not need to remember a command. The skill activates when you use phrases such as browse, search skills, find a skill for, or what's out there for. You can also run it as /registry-browser with a search query.
Use plain descriptions of the work. The skill matches your words against skill names and descriptions, so a specific phrase like contract review checklist will usually work better than a single vague word.
- Browse skills for NDA review
- Search skills for vendor contract redlining
- Find a skill for handling data subject access requests
- What's out there for legal project management?
/registry-browser [search query]Preview a skill before you install it
Each match is shown with the registry it came from, its description, and options to view the full SKILL.md or install it. Asking to view the full file fetches the whole instructions file so you can read it in full.
Read the instructions before deciding. The skill is designed so there are no surprises: the full file is shown before any installation decision.
- Check what the skill asks the agent to do
- Look for any steps that touch files, accounts or outside services
- Install only after you are satisfied with the instructions
Add a new registry safely
If you have the URL of a registry that is not on your watchlist, ask the skill to add it. It fetches the registry, checks that it is a skills repository (it must contain a skills/ folder or a .claude-plugin/ folder), and shows you what is inside. It only adds the registry to your CLAUDE.md watchlist after you confirm.
Only add registries you trust. Every registry you add becomes a source your agent will search later, so a new source widens what can reach your agent.
- Confirm the registry is a skills repository before adding it
- Review the contents shown to you before confirming
- Keep your list short and limited to sources you know
Safety notes: scripts and network access
The Registry Browser skill does not run scripts. It does use the network, because it fetches registry listings from GitHub or marketplace-style sources and fetches full SKILL.md files when you ask.
Because the skill only queries registries already on the watchlist or ones you add, its reach is limited. That also means the quality of results depends on the sources you choose.
- Runs scripts: no
- Uses network: yes
- Needs access to your ~/.claude plugin config folder
- Needs a local CLAUDE.md file listing watched registries
What people use it for
- A legal team looking for community-made workflow skills without knowing exact skill names
- A developer keeping a short list of trusted registries and wanting quick keyword lookup
- Anyone who wants to read a skill's full instructions before adding it to their agent
- Checking whether a skill already exists in a watched registry before writing a new one
Frequently asked questions
Is the Registry Browser skill free?
The source material for this page does not state pricing or licence terms beyond the licence listed for the item, which is Apache-2.0. Check the licence in the repository before using or redistributing the skill.
What do I need to run the registry-browser skill?
You need Claude Code or a compatible agent with access to your ~/.claude plugin config folder, network access to fetch registry listings from GitHub or marketplace-style sources, and a local CLAUDE.md file listing your watched registries.
How do I install registry-browser?
Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder. In the Claude apps, you can instead upload the ZIP under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
Does Registry Browser install skills for me?
No. It only browses and previews. The separate skill-installer skill is responsible for installing skills.
Why does the skill not show ratings or reviews?
It does not rate or review skills by design. It shows you the SKILL.md file and you judge its quality yourself.
Can it search the whole internet for skills?
No. It only searches registries on your watchlist or ones you add. That limits reach, but it also limits exposure to unknown sources.

Our verdict
Use registry-browser if you want to find community legal skills by keyword and read their full instructions before installing anything. Pick something else if you need a vetted or rated catalogue, since this skill explicitly does not judge quality, or if you want a broad internet search.
