How to use the Kami Document Typesetter agent skill
Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data
Kami is an agent skill, a folder of instructions and templates that an AI agent such as Claude loads when a task matches it. This guide is for people who have never installed a skill and want the agent to produce a polished resume, one-pager, letter, portfolio, slide deck or landing page. By the end you will know what the skill changes, how to install it, how to ask for a document in plain language, and what to check before trusting the output.
Quick start
- 1Download and unzip. Download the kami ZIP from the directory page and unzip it into a folder named kami.
- 2Place the skill folder. Move the folder to ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or to .claude/skills/ inside a project. Alternatively, upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills in the Claude apps.
- 3Install Python 3 and PDF tooling. Make sure Python 3 is available and that WeasyPrint or similar HTML-to-PDF tooling is installed for PDF output.
- 4Make a request. Ask for a specific document type in plain language, naming the language, length and any content you have.
- 5Review the contract and output. Read the one-line contract the agent states, then check the rendered PDF or page before using it.
What the kami skill makes the agent do
Kami is a set of document templates built around serif fonts, warm paper-toned backgrounds and ink-blue accents. Once the skill is installed, the agent picks a template that matches your request, drafts the content into a structured file, and renders the result to PDF or a web page.
The supported document types are resumes, one-pagers, white papers (long documents), letters, portfolios, slide decks, equity reports, changelogs and landing pages. The skill also includes eighteen diagram types, such as flowcharts, charts, sequence diagrams and ER diagrams, which can be placed as figures inside a document.
Install the kami skill from the ZIP
Download the kami ZIP from the directory page and unzip it. The skill folder is plugins/kami/skills/kami in the source repository, so the unzipped folder should contain SKILL.md, CHEATSHEET.md, assets/ and scripts/.
For a personal install, place the folder in ~/.claude/skills/. To limit it to one project, place it in that project's .claude/skills/ folder instead.
If you use the Claude apps, you can instead upload the skill under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
- Personal install: ~/.claude/skills/kami
- Project install: .claude/skills/kami inside your project folder
- App install: Settings → Capabilities → Skills
Check the requirements before the first document
The skill runs local Python scripts, so you need Python 3 available on your machine. The build scripts use WeasyPrint or similar HTML-to-PDF tooling for PDF output. Marp is optional and only needed for Markdown slides. An optional brand profile can be stored at ~/.config/kami/brand.md; if it is missing, the skill uses its built-in defaults.
- Python 3 (runs build.py and related scripts)
- WeasyPrint or similar tooling for PDF output
- Optional: Marp for Markdown slides
- Optional: brand profile at ~/.config/kami/brand.md
Trigger the skill with a natural request
You do not need special syntax. Describe the document in plain language and name its type. The skill's description lists trigger phrases such as 做 PDF, 排版, 简历, 一页纸, PPT and slides, and it also responds to requests for a Kami landing page. Name the language if it matters, since English and Chinese use different template variants.
Be specific about length, audience and the content you already have. The skill locks a short contract (language, template, output format, page target) and proceeds without waiting, so you will see its assumptions stated up front and can correct them.
- Resume: "Make a two-page resume in English from this text"
- One-pager: "Turn these notes into a one-page executive summary"
- Slides: "Create a 10-slide PDF deck about our Q3 results"
- Landing page: "Build a Kami landing page for my app"
Know what the skill will not do
The skill is for creating documents and landing pages. It explicitly excludes auditing or restyling an existing product website, so do not use it to review a live site's design.
The focus is HTML and PDF layout. If your main output must be an editable Word or Google Docs file, pick a tool built for that instead.
Safety notes: scripts and network access
The skill runs local scripts and uses the network. At the start of a task it runs scripts/check-update.sh, which keeps a local daily marker and at most once a day reads Kami's latest published GitHub Release. According to the skill, it uploads no document or task content and stays silent when offline or sandboxed.
Because rendering happens through local scripts, avoid using the skill to render sensitive documents on an online or shared machine.
- It runs scripts on your machine when building documents
- It may check for updates once a day against GitHub Releases
- It does not upload document content, according to its own description
- Do not render sensitive documents on shared or online machines
bash scripts/check-update.shWhat people use it for
- A job seeker produces a two-page resume in a consistent serif style from existing notes.
- A founder turns rough notes into a one-page executive summary for investors.
- A writer creates a print-ready PDF letter or portfolio without design software.
- A team drafts a slide deck in PDF from an outline.
- A maker builds a simple landing page to serve from a file.
Frequently asked questions
How do I install the kami skill?
Download the ZIP from the directory page and unzip it. Place the kami folder in ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use or in a project's .claude/skills/ folder, or upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills in the Claude apps.
What do I need to run kami?
You need Python 3 for the build scripts and WeasyPrint or similar HTML-to-PDF tooling for PDF output. Marp is optional and only needed for Markdown slides.
Is kami free to use?
The source repository is licensed under MIT. Check the licence file in the repository for the exact terms before you redistribute it.
Can kami edit my existing website design?
No. The skill explicitly excludes auditing or restyling an existing product site. It is for creating documents and landing pages.
Is it safe to use kami on sensitive documents?
The skill runs local scripts and uses the network for an update check that, according to its description, uploads no document content. Avoid rendering sensitive documents on an online or shared machine.
Can I get an editable Word file instead of a PDF?
Kami focuses on HTML and PDF layout, so it is not the right choice if your main output must be an editable Word or Google Docs file. Use a word processor for that.

Our verdict
Kami suits job seekers, founders and writers who want consistent, print-ready documents or a simple landing page and are comfortable running a local Python-based tool. Pick something else if you need an editable Word or Google Docs file as the main output, if you want to restyle an existing website, or if you must render confidential material on a shared or online machine.
