How to use the Grammar and Flow Checker agent skill

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

The Grammar and Flow Checker is an agent skill, a packaged set of instructions that an AI assistant such as Claude can load and follow. Once it is installed, you can ask your assistant to proofread or review a draft, and it will point out grammar, logic and flow problems with a suggested fix for each one. This guide explains what the skill does, how to install it, how to trigger it, and where it falls short.

Quick start

  1. 1Download the ZIP. Download the grammar-check skill ZIP from this page.
  2. 2Unzip into the skills folder. Unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or into the project's .claude/skills/ folder for one project.
  3. 3Or upload in the Claude apps. In the Claude apps, go to Settings → Capabilities → Skills and upload the skill.
  4. 4Paste your draft. Share the text you want checked and say what it is for and who will read it.
  5. 5Ask for a proofread. Use a plain request such as proofreading or reviewing a draft for clarity and flow.
  6. 6Work through the priority fixes. Start with the highest-ranked issues and make the edits yourself.

What the grammar-check skill makes the agent do

When the skill is active, the agent reads your text and checks it for spelling, punctuation and grammar mistakes, unsupported or vague claims, and awkward transitions or wording. It also comments on whether the tone fits the goal of the text.

For each problem, the agent gives the location, a suggested fix and a short reason, and ranks the problems by importance. The skill is written to leave your text as your own: it suggests targeted changes rather than rewriting the whole document.

  • Grammar: spelling, punctuation, subject-verb agreement, tense, modifier placement
  • Logic: contradictions, unsupported claims, unclear cause and effect, vague claims
  • Flow: choppy sentences, weak transitions, passive voice overuse, unclear pronouns, redundancy, tone inconsistency

Install the grammar-check skill

The skill is distributed as a ZIP file from this page. Download it, then unzip it into one of two places. For personal use across your projects, put it in ~/.claude/skills/. For a single project, put it in that project's .claude/skills/ folder.

If you use the Claude apps instead, you can upload the skill under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

  • Personal install: unzip into ~/.claude/skills/
  • Project install: unzip into the project's .claude/skills/ folder
  • Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload

Trigger the skill with a natural request

You do not need a special command. The skill's description says it applies when you are proofreading content, checking writing quality or reviewing a draft, so ask in those terms. Paste the text, or point the agent at the file, and say what the text is for, because the skill uses the goal of the text to judge tone.

  • Proofread this email to a client before I send it. It should sound confident but friendly.
  • Review my draft proposal for clarity and flow. Don't rewrite it, just tell me what to fix.
  • Check this landing page copy for unsupported claims and awkward wording.
  • Give me a quick copyedit of this blog post for a general audience.

Read and act on the output

The report is organised in four parts: an error summary with counts by category, the full list of fixes, a short list of priority fixes, and an assessment of how well the text meets its objective. The corrected text is not written out in full, so you make the changes yourself.

Work through the priority fixes first. These are the changes the skill rates as having the biggest effect on readability and clarity.

  • Error summary: total count split into grammar, logical and flow errors
  • Fixes by category: location, error, fix and reason for each
  • Priority fixes: the three to five most important changes
  • Tone and objective alignment: whether the text suits its purpose

Limits and safety notes

The skill runs no scripts and uses no network access, and it lists no other requirements. Its files consist of a single SKILL.md instruction file.

It is a general copyedit guide. It is not suitable as the final check for legal, medical or regulatory documents, which need a qualified human reviewer. It also flags unsupported statements but does not check facts against sources, so verify any claims yourself.

  • Runs scripts: no
  • Uses network: no
  • Requires: nothing listed
  • Not for final legal, medical or regulatory documents
  • Does not verify facts against sources

Tips for better results

Tell the agent the purpose and audience of the text. The skill begins by working out the objective, audience and tone, so a clear brief leads to more relevant fixes.

Ask for targeted edits when you want to keep your voice. The skill is built to avoid full rewrites, so if you want a rewrite of a single paragraph, ask for that paragraph separately.

  • Name the audience, for example customers, investors or colleagues
  • State the goal, such as persuading a buyer or explaining a feature
  • Send one section at a time for long documents

What people use it for

  • Polishing a sales email or proposal before sending it to a prospect
  • Checking a founder's pitch or landing page copy for vague or unsupported claims
  • Getting feedback on the clarity and flow of a student essay or report draft
  • Reviewing a professional document for tone that fits its audience

Frequently asked questions

What does the grammar-check skill do?

It checks text for spelling, punctuation and grammar mistakes, unsupported or vague claims, and awkward transitions or wording. For each problem it gives the location, a suggested fix and a short reason, ranked by importance. It is designed not to rewrite the whole text.

How do I install the grammar-check skill?

Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder. In the Claude apps, you can instead upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

What do I need to use it?

The skill lists no requirements. It runs no scripts and uses no network access. You need an AI assistant that supports agent skills, such as Claude.

It is released under the MIT licence. The source does not mention pricing, so check the listing for any cost details.

Does the skill check whether my facts are true?

No. It flags statements that are unsupported, but it does not verify facts against sources. You need to check factual claims yourself.
