How to use geo-seo-claude: audit AI search visibility in Claude Code

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

geo-seo-claude is an open-source GEO-first SEO skill that runs inside Claude Code. It checks how well a website is set up to appear in AI-powered search answers such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, and it also covers traditional SEO basics like technical health and structured data. This guide walks you through installing it, running its main commands and reading the output so you can act on the prioritized action list.

Quick start

  1. 1Check the prerequisites. Confirm Python 3.10+, Git and the Claude Code CLI are installed. Optionally install uv for a faster dependency install.
  2. 2Clone the repository. Run git clone on the geo-seo-claude repository, then move into the new folder.
  3. 3Run the installer. Run ./install.sh on macOS or Linux, or ./install-win.sh from Git Bash on Windows.
  4. 4Open Claude Code. Start Claude Code in your terminal so the /geo commands are available.
  5. 5Run a quick or full audit. Use /geo quick for a fast snapshot or /geo audit for the full scored audit with subagents.
  6. 6Work through the action list. Start with the quick wins in the prioritized list, then re-run the relevant single command to check progress.

What you need before you install geo-seo-claude

You need Python 3.10 or newer, the Claude Code CLI and Git. The tool's commands run inside Claude Code, so it is not useful on its own without it.

  • Python 3.10+ (on Debian/Ubuntu also python3-venv)
  • Claude Code CLI
  • Git
  • Optional: uv, which the installer uses for a faster dependency install if present
  • Optional: Playwright, for screenshots

Install geo-seo-claude on macOS, Linux or Windows

The manual install clones the repository and runs the installer from inside the folder. On Windows, run these commands from Git Bash, not PowerShell or Command Prompt, and use install-win.sh instead of install.sh.

Python dependencies go into a dedicated virtual environment at ~/.claude/skills/geo/.venv/, so your system Python is not changed. Uninstalling the skill removes that venv with the other files.

  • Windows users need Git for Windows, which includes Git Bash.
  • The uninstaller is uninstall.sh.
git clone https://github.com/zubair-trabzada/geo-seo-claude.git cd geo-seo-claude && ./install.sh

Run your first audit with /geo audit

Open Claude Code and run the full audit against a site. The audit launches five subagents in parallel covering AI visibility, platform analysis, technical SEO, content quality and schema markup, then combines their results into a composite GEO Score from 0 to 100.

If you only want a quick check, /geo quick gives a 60-second GEO visibility snapshot.

  • Discovery: fetches the homepage, detects business type and crawls the sitemap.
  • Parallel analysis: five subagents run at the same time.
  • Synthesis: scores are aggregated into the GEO Score.
  • Report: a prioritized action plan with quick wins.

Check specific areas with individual commands

You do not have to run the full audit. Each command targets one area of the site, which is useful when you already know where the problem is.

  • /geo citability <url>: scores content for AI citation readiness.
  • /geo crawlers <url>: checks AI crawler access in robots.txt.
  • /geo llmstxt <url>: analyzes or generates llms.txt.
  • /geo brands <url>: scans brand mentions across AI-cited platforms.
  • /geo platforms <url>: gives platform-specific optimization advice.
  • /geo schema <url>: analyzes and generates structured data.
  • /geo technical <url>: runs a technical SEO audit.
  • /geo content <url>: assesses content quality and E-E-A-T.
/geo crawlers https://example.com

Understand the GEO Score and what it means

The composite score is weighted across six categories. The README describes these as scores and recommendations, not as a measure of actual rankings or results.

Citability scoring looks for passages of 134 to 167 words that are self-contained, fact-rich and directly answer a question.

  • AI Citability & Visibility: 25%
  • Brand Authority Signals: 20%
  • Content Quality & E-E-A-T: 20%
  • Technical Foundations: 15%
  • Structured Data: 10%
  • Platform Optimization: 10%

Create client-ready reports

/geo report produces a client-ready report in markdown. /geo report-pdf produces a PDF with charts and visualizations. The PDF generator is built with ReportLab, according to the project's file list.

The CRM-style commands /geo prospect, /geo proposal and /geo compare store data in ~/.geo-prospects/. The uninstaller does not remove this folder, so delete it by hand if you no longer need it.

  • Markdown report: /geo report <url>
  • PDF report: /geo report-pdf
  • Prospect data folder: ~/.geo-prospects/
/geo report https://example.com

What people use it for

  • A website owner checks whether their robots.txt allows AI crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot.
  • A freelancer runs /geo audit before a client call and exports a PDF with /geo report-pdf.
  • A developer already working in Claude Code runs /geo schema to check structured data during development.
  • A marketer uses /geo citability on key articles to find passages that could be rewritten to answer questions directly.

Frequently asked questions

Is geo-seo-claude free?

The project is released under the MIT licence, according to the README. The README does not mention paid tiers for the tool itself; the Skool community link it mentions is for learning how to sell these services to businesses.

Do I need Claude Code to use geo-seo-claude?

Yes. The commands run inside Claude Code, so people who do not use Claude Code cannot use the tool as described. The project is not a hosted web tool with no local setup.

How do I install geo-seo-claude on Windows?

Install Git for Windows, open Git Bash in the folder, and run ./install-win.sh after cloning. The README says to run it from Git Bash, not PowerShell or Command Prompt.

Where are the Python dependencies installed?

They go into a virtual environment at ~/.claude/skills/geo/.venv/. Your system Python is not touched, and uninstalling the skill removes the venv.

Does geo-seo-claude guarantee higher rankings?

No. The README describes scores and recommendations, not results, and it does not promise rankings. Treat the GEO Score as a checklist of areas to improve.

How does it compare to other SEO tools?

The source does not name comparable projects, so this guide makes no comparison claims. Its distinguishing features are the AI-search focus, the Claude Code commands and the local install.
