How to use the Business Model Canvas Builder agent skill
Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data
ljg-business-model is an agent skill that turns your project description, interview notes, product material or business plan into a classic nine-block Business Model Canvas. You get a Chinese-language landscape PNG as the main output, plus an editable HTML file and structured JSON. This guide explains what the skill does, how to install it, how to ask for a canvas, and what it needs to run.
Quick start
- 1Download the ZIP. Download the ZIP of skills/ljg-business-model from the directory page.
- 2Unzip into a skills folder. Unzip into ~/.claude/skills/ for all projects, or into .claude/skills/ inside one project. Confirm that SKILL.md is in the installed folder.
- 3Install Bun and a browser tool. Make sure the Bun runtime is available and that you have a real browser or browser tool that can take screenshots.
- 4Ask for a canvas with your material. Mention ljg-business-model or ask for a business model canvas, and paste your project description, interview notes or plan.
- 5Review the PNG, HTML and JSON. Check the pending items and inferred points. Ask the agent to revise any block whose content does not match your material.
What an agent skill is and what this one makes the agent do
An agent skill is a folder of instructions and optional scripts that an AI agent loads when your request matches the skill's purpose. This one is for building Business Model Canvases from material you supply.
The skill organizes your material into the nine standard blocks: customer segments, value propositions, channels, customer relationships, revenue streams, key resources, key activities, key partners and cost structure. Each point is marked as given by your material (given), inferred (inferred) or missing (unknown). Missing items appear as 'pending' rather than being filled in from outside research.
- Main output: a Chinese-language PNG poster of the canvas, rendered at 2x pixel density by default
- Also delivered: an editable HTML file and structured JSON for later changes
- Designed to avoid inventing numbers, customers or partners that your material does not support
- A tidy canvas does not prove that demand or payment logic works
Install the skill from a ZIP file
Download the ZIP of skills/ljg-business-model from the directory page, then unzip it into one of these locations. Use the user-level folder to make it available across projects, or a project folder to limit it to one project.
You can also install it in the Claude apps by uploading the skill under Settings → Capabilities → Skills. The folder you install should contain SKILL.md, which is the file that tells the agent when and how to use the skill.
- User-wide: ~/.claude/skills/
- Single project: .claude/skills/ inside your project folder
- Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload the skill
Check what you need before running it
The skill runs a local TypeScript script, Tools/Render.ts, which needs the Bun runtime. It also needs a real web browser, or a browser tool, that can open the generated HTML and take a screenshot. Without screenshot capability, the skill keeps the HTML and says clearly that the PNG was not produced.
The skill runs scripts (yes) and does not use the network (no), according to the skill's own documentation.
- Bun runtime to execute Tools/Render.ts
- A local real browser or browser tool with screenshot capability to render the HTML and export the PNG
- Your own material: a project description, interview notes, product documents or a business plan
bun Tools/Render.ts --helpAsk for a canvas with natural requests
You can trigger the skill by naming it, or by asking for a canvas in ordinary words. The skill's trigger phrases include requests to draw a business model canvas, a nine-grid business model, or to turn business information into a canvas card. Give the material in the same message when you can.
The skill does not handle general business analysis, investment valuation, Lean Canvas, or simple explanations of business model concepts. Ask for those separately.
- 'Use ljg-business-model: we provide procurement services for small restaurants and charge by transaction value.' The skill draws one card from what you gave and marks gaps as pending.
- 'Turn this two-sided platform interview into a business model canvas.' The skill tracks users and paying customers separately.
- 'This is yesterday's canvas. We are now moving to an annual subscription.' The skill updates the revenue method and checks whether other blocks change. Changes without evidence are marked inferred.
Follow the render and check steps
The skill writes a draft input JSON in a temporary folder, then runs Tools/Render.ts to create the HTML. It opens the HTML in a real browser, waits for fonts, checks block order, text and overflow, then exports the whole canvas to PNG. The format of the input file is described in Tools/Render.help.md, and a complete fictional example is in Example.json.
Only checked outputs are moved into the folder you choose. If the renderer rejects text that is too long or too many items, the skill asks you to tighten the input and run again rather than bypassing the check.
- Default width is 1600 CSS px; accepted range is 1200 to 2400
- The renderer does not overwrite an existing output path, so earlier versions are kept
- Each block allows up to 5 items, and each item text up to 90 characters
bun "$SKILL_DIR/Tools/Render.ts" --input "$WORK_DIR/model.json" --output "$WORK_DIR/model.html"Safety notes on scripts, network and licence
Render.ts has no external dependencies. It treats all text as plain text and escapes it, and it does not run HTML included in your input. The generated HTML does not connect to external services. The skill documents no network use, so your material stays on your machine during rendering.
The canvas template is adapted from Osterwalder and Pigneur's Business Model Generation and the Strategyzer Business Model Canvas, and the footer keeps the CC BY-SA 3.0 attribution. The skill describes its layout as a Chinese adaptation, not the official original. The licence covers the template only; rights in your business material do not change.
- The renderer refuses to overwrite an existing output file
- Review the generated canvas before sharing, because it reflects only the material you supplied
- The licence of the skill is MIT
What people use it for
- Turn a one-page founder pitch into a visual canvas for a team discussion
- Organize interview notes from students or consultants into the standard nine blocks
- Show who pays and who uses a two-sided platform on one canvas, with C1 and C2 labels
- Update an earlier canvas after a pricing or customer model change, keeping unaffected points
Frequently asked questions
How do I install the ljg-business-model skill?
Download the ZIP of skills/ljg-business-model from the directory page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ or a project's .claude/skills/ folder. In the Claude apps you can instead upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
Is ljg-business-model free to use, and what licence does it have?
The skill is published under the MIT licence. The canvas layout is adapted from the Business Model Canvas, which is credited under CC BY-SA 3.0 in the footer. Your own business material keeps its existing rights.
What does ljg-business-model require to run?
It requires the Bun runtime to execute Tools/Render.ts and a real browser or browser tool that can render HTML and take a screenshot. The skill runs scripts and does not use the network.
What if the skill makes an HTML file but no PNG?
This happens when no screenshot-capable browser is available. The skill keeps the HTML and states that the PNG was not completed, rather than presenting the HTML link as an image.
Does this skill replace Lean Canvas or investment valuation tools?
No. The skill explicitly excludes Lean Canvas, investment valuation and general business analysis. It keeps the classic nine-block layout and does not switch formats, so use another tool for those tasks.
Will the canvas prove my business model works?
No. The skill warns that a tidy layout does not validate demand or payment logic. Contradictory or unverified material is kept visible on the canvas rather than smoothed over.

Our verdict
Use this skill if you have a real project description, interview notes or a plan and want a one-page, editable Business Model Canvas that separates what your material says from what is inferred or missing. Pick another tool if you need Lean Canvas, investment valuation or general market research, or if you have no supplied material for the skill to work from.
