How to use the Add Webex Channel agent skill
Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data
The add-webex skill is a setup recipe for NanoClaw, an open-source personal AI agent framework. It adds a Webex channel so your agent can chat with you and your team in Webex spaces, which are group rooms or direct messages. This guide explains what a skill is, how to install this one, how to trigger it, and what it needs before you start.
Quick start
- 1Download and unzip the skill. Download the add-webex ZIP from this page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ or a project's .claude/skills/ folder.
- 2Prepare NanoClaw. Confirm you have a NanoClaw checkout with pnpm, Node, and access to the channels branch.
- 3Create the Webex bot. On developer.webex.com, create a bot and copy its Bot Access Token.
- 4Create the webhook. Create a webhook pointing to https://your-domain/webhook/webex and set a webhook secret.
- 5Run the skill. Ask your agent to add the Webex channel. Paste the token and secret when prompted.
- 6Expose port 3000. Use ngrok, a Cloudflare Tunnel, or a reverse proxy so the webhook server is publicly reachable.
- 7Connect and test. Run /manage-channels to link the channel to an agent group, restart the service and send a message in a Webex space.
What is an agent skill and what does add-webex do?
An agent skill is a folder of instructions, packaged with a SKILL.md file, that an AI agent reads and follows to perform a specific task. This skill targets NanoClaw, which does not ship with Webex support in its main branch. The skill copies a Webex messaging adapter in from the channels branch, registers it, installs its package and runs a test.
Once applied, the agent can receive messages from Webex. You still need to create a Webex bot and set up a webhook yourself, because those steps happen in the Webex Developer Portal and cannot be automated by the skill.
- Copies src/channels/webex.ts and src/channels/webex-registration.test.ts from the channels branch
- Appends import './webex.js'; to src/channels/index.ts
- Installs @bitbasti/chat-adapter-webex@0.1.0 (pinned version)
- Runs a build and an integration test
- Stores your bot token and webhook secret in .env when you provide them
How do you install the add-webex skill?
Download the ZIP file for the skill from this page and unzip it. Place the resulting add-webex folder in one of these locations: ~/.claude/skills/ to make it available across your projects, or .claude/skills/ inside a single project folder to limit it to that project.
You can also upload the skill in the Claude apps. Open Settings, go to Capabilities, then Skills, and upload the ZIP there.
- Personal: ~/.claude/skills/add-webex
- Project only: .claude/skills/add-webex inside your NanoClaw checkout
What do you need before you start?
The skill edits a NanoClaw source tree, so it only works on a NanoClaw project checkout. You need pnpm and Node, plus access to the channels git branch. Webex requires a publicly reachable URL to deliver messages, so you also need a public host or tunnel that reaches port 3000.
- A NanoClaw project checkout that uses pnpm and Node
- Access to the channels git branch
- A Webex bot created on developer.webex.com with a Bot Access Token
- A webhook secret of your choice
- A public host or tunnel (ngrok, Cloudflare Tunnel, or a reverse proxy) reaching port 3000
- The third-party npm package @bitbasti/chat-adapter-webex@0.1.0
How do you create the Webex bot and webhook?
Go to developer.webex.com and create a new bot. Copy the Bot Access Token shown on the bot's page. Then create a webhook that points to https://your-domain/webhook/webex, using the Webex API or the Developer Portal, and set a webhook secret for signature verification.
When the skill prompts you, paste the Bot Access Token and the webhook secret. The skill writes them to .env as WEBEX_BOT_TOKEN and WEBEX_WEBHOOK_SECRET. It only sets values that are not already present, so an existing value is never overwritten.
WEBEX_BOT_TOKEN=...
WEBEX_WEBHOOK_SECRET=...How do you expose the webhook server?
The Chat SDK bridge starts a shared webhook server on port 3000 and handles the path /webhook/webex. Set WEBHOOK_PORT in .env to change the port. For Webex to deliver events, this port must be reachable from the internet. Locally, you can run ngrok http 3000, use a Cloudflare Tunnel, or put a reverse proxy on a VPS. The public URL becomes the base of your webhook URL.
The webhook server listens on 127.0.0.1 only. If your tunnel or proxy runs on another machine, or in Docker on Linux, add WEBHOOK_HOST=0.0.0.0 to .env and restart the service.
ngrok http 3000How do you trigger the skill with a natural request?
Ask your agent in plain language, for example to add Webex as a channel in your NanoClaw project. The agent should load the add-webex skill and follow its steps. The source does not list fixed trigger phrases, so describe the goal clearly, such as connecting the agent to Webex spaces.
After the skill runs, it tells you to return to /setup if you are in the middle of that flow. Otherwise run /manage-channels to connect this channel to an agent group.
- Example request: Add the Webex channel to my NanoClaw agent.
- Example request: Connect my agent to a Webex space for my team.
- Example request: Set up Webex messaging using the add-webex skill.
What safety points should you check?
This skill runs scripts and uses the network. Its build and test commands run in your project, and the channel is reachable from the internet once you expose port 3000. Only expose the port if you accept that exposure. The skill edits your source tree and depends on the channel barrel file and NanoClaw's CLI commands, so it is not suitable for other projects.
To remove the integration, the REMOVE.md file deletes the import line, the copied adapter files and the .env entries, then uninstalls the package and rebuilds.
- Webex can only deliver messages to a publicly reachable URL, which exposes port 3000 to the internet
- Pinned package version 0.1.0 comes from the third-party @bitbasti namespace
- Token and secret values go into .env, so protect that file
- REMOVE.md contains the uninstall steps
pnpm uninstall @bitbasti/chat-adapter-webexWhat people use it for
- Chat with your personal NanoClaw agent in a 1:1 Webex direct message with the bot
- Give a team a shared agent in a Webex group space
- Keep separate agent groups for spaces with different teams or sensitive information
- Use Webex threads, since the channel supports them
Frequently asked questions
How do I install the add-webex skill?
Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for all projects, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder. You can also upload the ZIP in the Claude apps under Settings, then Capabilities, then Skills.
What do I need to use the add-webex skill?
You need a NanoClaw project checkout with pnpm, Node and access to the channels branch. You also need a Webex bot with a Bot Access Token, a webhook secret, and a public host or tunnel that reaches port 3000.
Is the add-webex skill free and open source?
The skill is published under the MIT licence, and NanoClaw is an open-source framework. The source does not list prices, so check the licence file in the repository for the terms.
Can I use add-webex without NanoClaw?
No. The skill edits NanoClaw's source tree and depends on its channel barrel and CLI commands, so it is designed only for NanoClaw projects.
Why does my Webex bot return 401 errors?
The usual cause is using a 12-hour personal access token from the API docs instead of the Bot Access Token on the bot's page under developer.webex.com. Regenerate the bot token there if needed and update WEBEX_BOT_TOKEN right away, because regenerating invalidates the old value.
Why are my Webex messages not reaching the agent?
Check that your webhook targets your public host at /webhook/webex with resource messages. List webhooks with GET https://webexapis.com/v1/webhooks using the bot token. Webex sets a webhook to inactive after repeated delivery failures, so re-enable or recreate it.

Our verdict
Use add-webex if you already run NanoClaw and want its agent reachable in Webex spaces, and you are comfortable exposing a public webhook port. If you do not run NanoClaw, or you cannot accept a publicly reachable endpoint, choose a different channel or messaging setup.
