Creating AVIF relies on canvas.toBlob("image/avif"), which only some browsers support; the tool tests yours and offers WebP if it can't. Reading AVIF works in current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16.4+. Browser AVIF encoders are slower than JPG/WebP.

FAQ

Why does it say my browser can't make AVIF?

Encoding AVIF from a web page is still not universal. We check your browser live instead of guessing; if it isn't available, WebP is the closest widely supported alternative.

How much smaller is AVIF?

Typically 30–50% smaller than JPG and 15–20% smaller than WebP at similar visual quality, especially for photos.

Can every site display AVIF?

All current major browsers display AVIF. For older browsers, serve it with a <picture> element and a JPG or WebP fallback.
