What it does

When you ask the agent to help structure a systems research paper, this skill makes it follow a detailed plan: how many pages each section should take (for a roughly 12-page paper), what each paragraph should do, and common writing patterns used at top systems conferences such as OSDI, SOSP, ASPLOS, NSDI and EuroSys. It is a writing guide only; it does not write the LaTeX or check citations itself, and it points the user to a companion skill (paper-write) for those steps.

Great for

  • Researchers preparing a submission to a systems conference who want a paragraph-level outline
  • Students or first-time authors who need to understand how systems papers are typically organised
  • Authors who already have a research outline (for example from a paper-plan skill) and need help turning it into a page-budgeted draft

Skip it if

  • Authors who need the paper actually generated in LaTeX or citations verified: this skill only gives structure and defers those tasks to other skills
  • Non-systems venues or fields with different conventions, since the page budgets and patterns are specific to systems conferences and may be out of date (the file says to check current calls for papers)
  • Anyone trying to produce results or observations to fill the paper: the skill forbids fabricating data, but it cannot supply real experiments, so using it without real evaluation work would be misleading

Try asking

  • “Help me outline a 12-page OSDI submission on a new storage scheduler, with page budgets per section”
  • “Write a paragraph plan for the introduction of my SOSP paper using the problem, gap, insight, contributions pattern”
  • “Check my draft's design section against the rule that every design choice must discuss alternatives”
  • “Give me a three-statement checklist for my evaluation section so each conclusion is stated as hypothesis, result and caption”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Systems Paper Structure BlueprintInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    writing-systems-papers.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip writing-systems-papers.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip writing-systems-papers.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Run a research-outline step first, then use this skill to turn the outline into paragraph-level structure
  • Check the venue's current call for papers, since the file notes page limits and camera-ready rules change yearly
  • Treat the cited advice (for example from Irene Zhang or Levin and Redell) as guidance to read, not text to copy
