What it does

Once installed, the agent can control Aputure or amaran studio lights on your Mac: switch to a saved scene such as 'recording' or 'normal', set brightness or color temperature for a named light, or save the current light levels as a new scene. It talks to the amaran Desktop app running on your computer over a local connection, then reads back each light's state to confirm the change actually happened. Your fixtures and scenes are stored in your own user folder, not inside the skill.

Great for

  • Video creators or streamers who want one phrase to set their studio lights for recording
  • People with an amaran or Aputure rig who want to automate lighting changes from a computer
  • Anyone who already keeps a LifeOS setup and wants lighting controlled by the agent

Skip it if

  • House or smart-bulb lighting such as Philips Hue or thermostats, which the skill explicitly excludes; it only controls studio fixtures (it would not work for those anyway)
  • Setups without amaran Desktop installed or without these physical lights, since there is nothing to control and the tool will fail
  • Situations where a light's brightness or heat matters for safety and nobody is watching; the skill itself says lighting scenes need a visual check

Try asking

  • “set lights for recording”
  • “lights back to normal”
  • “key light to 30%”
  • “save this lighting as recording”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Studio Lights ControlInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 4 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    StudioLights.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip StudioLights.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip StudioLights.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Run 'bun Tools/Lights.ts devices' first to discover the node IDs before writing devices.json.
  • Mark daylight-only fixtures with supportsCct false so color temperature commands are skipped for them.
  • Rename-sensitive: if a Shortcut or other skill calls a scene by name, update it when you rename the scene.
