What it does

Once installed, the agent knows Obsidian's special note syntax: YAML properties, wikilinks like [[Note Name]], embeds, callouts, tags, highlights, block references, math, and Mermaid diagrams. It can explain this syntax, draft a note in it, or check a drafted note for broken links and formatting errors. If you ask it to edit your vault, it does not write directly; it builds a reviewable change bundle, shows it for approval, and only then applies it through the repository's transaction tooling, limited to wiki/ paths.

Great for

  • People who keep notes in Obsidian and want correctly formatted properties, links, and callouts
  • Anyone building a linked knowledge base who wants link and heading references checked
  • Users who want an agent to draft notes that follow Obsidian conventions

Skip it if

  • General Markdown or non-Obsidian note-taking, since the skill is scoped to Obsidian syntax and is told not to handle broad vault operations
  • Unreviewed bulk vault edits: vault changes go through an approval step, but approving without reading the diff can still alter or remove wiki pages
  • Version-sensitive Obsidian questions, since the file itself points users to the official help site for current details

Try asking

  • “Explain how to write a wikilink to a heading or block reference in Obsidian”
  • “Draft a new concept note with YAML properties, tags, and a source link”
  • “Check this note for broken wikilinks and unbalanced callout syntax”
  • “Add a warning callout to the Retrieval page in my vault after showing me the change first”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Obsidian Markdown SyntaxInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    obsidian-markdown.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip obsidian-markdown.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip obsidian-markdown.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Ask for syntax help or a draft first; the skill only edits your vault when you explicitly request it and approve the reviewed bundle
  • Review the transaction inspection output before approving, and check that only the intended wiki/ paths change
  • Specify the vault path explicitly so edits do not land in an unintended folder
