Turns an academic Markdown manuscript into a journal- or thesis-formatted .docx file

What it does

When installed, the agent converts a research manuscript written in Markdown into a Word document that follows formatting rules for a journal or university thesis. It handles styled headings and captions, native Word equations, three-line tables, cross-references, page numbering by section, and bibliographies in styles such as GB/T 7714, APA, Nature and IEEE. It also runs checks before and after export, so structural problems are reported with line numbers instead of silently producing a messy file.

Great for

  • Researchers preparing a manuscript for journal submission as a .docx
  • Graduate students formatting a thesis to a school template
  • Users who already write in Markdown and want a submission-ready Word file

Skip it if

  • Producing PDF, HTML or LaTeX output, which the skill explicitly excludes (the Word file is the only target)
  • Slide decks or grant application forms, which are out of scope
  • Anyone expecting it to turn arbitrary unformatted text into a finished document without restructuring it, since the input must follow a strict Markdown contract

Try asking

  • “Convert my thesis.md into a .docx that follows our university's formatting spec”
  • “Export this manuscript as a Word file in the en-nature preset with a References section in APA style”
  • “Prepare a submission-ready docx from my Chinese paper with a numbered three-line table and cross-referenced equations”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 6 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    nature-paper2word.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip nature-paper2word.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip nature-paper2word.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Run md-to-word --version first to confirm the engine is installed; the skill ships documentation only and depends on the external package
  • Keep your original file untouched; the skill is designed to work on a normalized copy and to stop with line numbers when the manuscript breaks the contract
  • Read the manual printed by md-to-word --contract before writing a custom format file, because the accepted spellings are strict
