What it does

When installed, the agent follows a set of Git conventions for commit messages, branch names, and pull request descriptions. It can suggest a commit message in the type(scope): subject format, check whether a message fits that format using a bundled Python script, and walk through common Git commands for starting work, committing, rebasing and opening a pull request. The skill is guidance and a small validation helper; it does not change your repository on its own.

Great for

  • Developers who want consistent commit messages and PR descriptions across a team
  • Teams that follow conventional commits and ticket-prefixed branch names
  • Newer Git users who want step-by-step command reminders

Skip it if

  • Teams with a different commit or branch convention, since the rules here would conflict with their own (adjust the SKILL.md first)
  • Anyone expecting the agent to run Git operations against a live repository automatically; the skill only describes commands, and the bundled script only validates or generates message text

Try asking

  • “Write a conventional commit message for these staged changes”
  • “Check whether this commit message follows the project format: fix login crash on empty password”
  • “Suggest a branch name for ticket BUG-812 about the null pointer in the export job”
  • “Draft a pull request description using the team template”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Git Workflow HelperInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 3 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    git-workflow.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip git-workflow.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip git-workflow.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Review any commit message the agent drafts before committing, especially the type and scope choices.
  • Give the agent your ticket ID and a short description so the branch name and footer references are filled in correctly.
  • The script's type list differs slightly from SKILL.md (it adds build and ci, and the SKILL.md format uses a parenthesised scope while the script checks for a colon), so check its output against your own rules.

What's inside

  • references/commit-types.md
  • scripts/commit_message.py
  • SKILL.md
