What it does

When an AI agent is preparing a code change that would produce a large pull request (over 400 changed lines), this skill makes it split the work into a sequence of smaller PRs that depend on each other, each small enough to review in about an hour. It guides the agent to pick a strategy (stacked PRs to main, or a feature branch with a draft tracker PR), explain each PR's scope and dependencies with a diagram, and report the review size. The skill is a set of instructions and reference notes; it does not itself change code.

Great for

  • Developers whose AI-assisted changes keep producing very large pull requests that are hard to review
  • Teams that use stacked or chained PRs and want consistent PR bodies and branch ordering
  • Maintainers who want a size budget enforced with a documented exception path (size:exception)

Skip it if

  • Small, focused changes under 400 lines, where the skill adds needless process
  • Repositories that do not use GitHub-style pull requests or branch-based review, since the branch and PR commands assume that workflow
  • Large generated, vendor or migration diffs that cannot be split cleanly; the skill tells the agent to ask a maintainer for an exception instead of solving it

Try asking

  • “Split this feature branch into reviewable chained PRs under 400 lines each.”
  • “This change is over 400 lines; plan a stacked PR sequence and show the dependency diagram.”
  • “Set up a feature branch chain with a draft tracker PR for this multi-part feature.”
  • “Review my planned PR size and tell me the review budget and verification plan for each slice.”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Chained PR SplitterInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 2 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    chained-pr.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip chained-pr.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip chained-pr.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Give the agent the planned diff or branch so it can estimate changed lines (additions plus deletions) before splitting.
  • Decide the chain strategy up front; the skill forbids mixing strategies once one is chosen.
  • Check the generated PR bodies and branch targets before pushing, since the agent will create real branches and PRs if allowed to.
