What it does

It makes the agent act as a panel of simulated beta readers who meet your draft one passage at a time, without seeing ahead. Each reader keeps a log of what they felt, where they lost interest or quit, and what they remembered later. You get a short summary, a page showing reader comments beside each passage, and a quiz on what survived, but no rewritten copy.

Great for

  • Writers who want to know whether a post or essay would actually be read to the end
  • Marketers checking whether a landing page or announcement holds attention
  • People whose draft feels hollow after running anti-slop or humanizer edits

Skip it if

  • Factual or code review, since the readers judge experience, not accuracy (wrong tool for that job)
  • Reference docs like API guides or FAQs, where skimming is the goal and the timed read does not apply
  • Anyone expecting the simulated readers to stand in for real human testers; they are a model of reading, not evidence of how people react

Try asking

  • “review this”
  • “quick read of whether a busy skimmer would open this post”
  • “again, after I revised the draft in my editor”
  • “ask the skimmer what would have made them open it”
Step-by-step guide: how to use First Reader Beta PanelInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 13 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    first-reader.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip first-reader.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip first-reader.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Give the readers a clear audience in your request, or the skill may ask one intake question
  • Save each run's files in the .first-reader folder and consider gitignoring it if the draft is in a git repo
  • Treat the readers' comments as signals to investigate, then decide the edits yourself
