What it does

Once installed, the agent can run web searches through Exa, a paid AI-powered search service, and return structured results with titles, links, dates, and extracted content such as highlights, full page text, or summaries. It is meant for finding blogs, docs, news, company pages and research papers beyond academic databases, and it can find pages similar to a given URL. The skill runs a bundled Python helper that calls Exa's API using your key.

Great for

  • Researchers who need web sources beyond arXiv and Semantic Scholar
  • Developers looking up documentation, blog posts, or company information
  • Anyone who wants search results with page excerpts or summaries included

Skip it if

  • Searching only academic papers, where /arxiv or /semantic-scholar is more direct (the skill itself says so)
  • Private or sensitive queries, since search terms and URLs are sent to Exa's external service
  • Setups without Python, the exa-py package, or an Exa API key, because the skill cannot produce results without them

Try asking

  • “/exa-search "RAG pipelines" — max: 5”
  • “/exa-search "startup funding" — category: news, start date: 2025-01-01”
  • “/exa-search "https://arxiv.org/abs/2301.07041" — similar”
  • “/exa-search "transformer" — domains: arxiv.org,huggingface.co”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Exa Web SearchInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    exa-search.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip exa-search.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip exa-search.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Set a narrow category or date range to get more relevant results and fewer noisy hits
  • Use content: text only when you need full page text, since it returns more data and may cost more
  • Check that the helper resolves correctly before running, because the skill depends on the wider ARIS repo setup
