What it does

Lets the agent act as an automated tuner for computer architecture and EDA experiments. You give it a program to run, the parameters to change, and a goal such as maximizing IPC or minimizing area. The agent runs the program, reads the results, picks new parameter values, and repeats within a time or iteration budget, logging every run to a results folder with a final report. The file is only a workflow description; it is the agent that would run the commands.

Great for

  • Computer architecture researchers sweeping cache, pipeline, or buffer parameters in simulators like gem5
  • EDA engineers tuning synthesis or place-and-route scripts toward timing or area targets
  • Developers who want an agent to benchmark compiler flags and keep the best configuration

Skip it if

  • Simple one-off tasks or anything without a scriptable, measurable objective, since the loop depends on a machine-readable metric
  • Projects where the agent should not run long jobs unattended, because it can run for hours (default timeout 2h) and execute arbitrary shell commands
  • Shared or production machines, because the skill is granted Bash(*) and may create, edit and overwrite files in the project

Try asking

  • “Sweep cache size and associativity in my gem5 config to maximize IPC within 4 hours”
  • “Find the best clock period and effort level for my yosys synthesis script, minimizing area at timing closure”
  • “Run a DSE over FIFO depth and pipeline stages in my verilator testbench, max_iterations 100”
  • “Optimize -O level and unroll factor for my benchmark build, minimize runtime”
Step-by-step guide: how to use DSE Loop ExplorerInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    dse-loop.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip dse-loop.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip dse-loop.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Give explicit parameter ranges, program command, objective metric and timeout in the argument to avoid guesswork; review dse_results/inferred_params.md before long runs
  • Run it in a sandboxed or throwaway copy of the project first, since it has unrestricted Bash and can write or overwrite files
  • Keep the baseline run short to validate the metric parser before letting the loop run for hours
