Create Forge Agents

Teaches the agent how to write new custom agent definition files for the code-forge app

What it does

When installed, the agent knows the exact file format code-forge uses for custom agents: a markdown file with YAML frontmatter (id, title, description, reasoning, tools, user_prompt) saved in the project's .forge/agents folder. Asked to add or change an agent, it follows this structure and naming convention so forge can discover and load the new agent. It only changes how the agent writes these files; it does not add any new tools or capabilities by itself.

Great for

  • Developers customizing code-forge with their own specialized agents
  • Teams who want consistent agent definitions across a project
  • Anyone learning how code-forge agent files are structured

Skip it if

  • People who are not using the code-forge application, since the files only work there (the format is specific to forge)
  • Users wanting general coding help unrelated to defining agents, because this skill only covers agent file structure
  • Anyone expecting the skill to verify that a generated agent is safe or well-behaved; it gives guidance only, so review the tools list and instructions yourself

Try asking

  • “Create a new code-reviewer agent in my project's forge agents folder”
  • “Modify my existing test-automation agent to add the shell tool”
  • “Explain the YAML frontmatter fields required for a forge agent file”
  • “Set up a new read-only research agent for this codebase”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Create Forge AgentsInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    create-agent.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip create-agent.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip create-agent.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Name the agent id and purpose clearly in your request so the file name and description match what you want
  • Review the tools list before saving: granting shell, write, or mcp_* gives the agent powerful abilities
  • Check that the file is saved in <cwd>/.forge/agents, since forge will not find agents elsewhere
