What it does

When installed, the agent can look at a Convex app's pinned component versions, compare them against recommended versions from a registry, and list which ones are outdated. Only after you explicitly approve does it upgrade each component one at a time, applying the listed migration steps and running typecheck and build commands after each step; if a check fails, it reverts the changes and reports back. It also tells you which smoke test to run after each successful upgrade.

Great for

  • Developers maintaining a Next.js app built on Convex who want to keep components current
  • Teams that want upgrades done in small, verified steps rather than all at once
  • Maintainers who want a checklist of stale components before a release

Skip it if

  • Projects that do not use Convex, since the workflow is specific to Convex components (not useful outside that stack)
  • Production apps where you want to upgrade without a snapshot or review: breaking upgrades need a git commit or branch first, and auto-republishing a live convex.app site is blocked without your confirmation
  • Users who are not comfortable with the agent running a downloaded script, since it fetches and executes code from an external URL

Try asking

  • “Check whether any of the Convex components in this app are out of date.”
  • “Upgrade the stale components one at a time, and stop if a build check fails.”
  • “List the stale components with their breaking-change flags before changing anything.”
  • “After upgrading the auth component, tell me which smoke test to run.”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    convex-check-updates.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip convex-check-updates.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip convex-check-updates.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Commit or branch your work before running an upgrade so you have a clean rollback point, especially for breaking changes.
  • Review the stale component list and migration steps before saying yes; the agent will ask first.
  • Run the smoke check after each upgrade rather than waiting until all components are done.
