What it does
This skill teaches an AI agent how to operate the cognee command-line tool, which stores text, files, and URLs into a searchable knowledge graph and retrieves answers from it. Once installed, the agent knows the right commands for adding memories, asking questions, deleting data, managing settings, and running database migrations, and it warns about risky options such as forget --all, which deletes everything without asking for confirmation. The skill itself is documentation; it does not add new code to your machine.
Great for
- Developers who already use cognee and want an agent to run its CLI for them
- Data engineers scripting ingestion or rebuilding a cognee knowledge graph
- Teams setting up or rolling back cognee database migrations
Skip it if
- Anyone who wants to run forget --all or downgrade casually: forget --all deletes every dataset with no prompt, and downgrade rewrites stored data
- People without cognee installed or without an LLM_API_KEY configured, since the commands will not work
Try asking
- “Remember everything in ./docs under the dataset name my_project, then run a dry-run to estimate token cost first”
- “Recall the answer to a question from my_project using chunk-level search with top-k 5”
- “Show my cognee configuration with API keys masked, then set the LLM model setting”
- “Check the current migration revision and upgrade the data chain to head”

Add it to your agent
Claude Code (all projects)
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip cognee-cli.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)
mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip cognee-cli.zip -d .claude/skills/Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Run remember with --dry-run first to see estimated LLM tokens and cost before ingesting large folders
- Scope commands with --dataset-name or -d so forget and recall do not touch unrelated data, and use --memory-only if you may need to rebuild later
- Have the agent confirm before any forget, delete, or downgrade command, and back up data before running them
