What it does
When installed, the agent can create, update, or audit a CLAUDE.md file, the project note that Claude Code loads at the start of each session to learn a codebase. It follows the skill's rules: keep the file under about 200 lines, cover what the project is, its tech stack, key commands and non-obvious pitfalls, avoid style rules and code snippets, and move task-specific details into separate files. It asks for review before writing changes, and an audit mode only reports problems without editing.
Great for
- Developers setting up a new repository for AI coding agents
- Teams whose existing CLAUDE.md has grown long and needs trimming
- Maintainers of monorepos who want clear WHAT/WHY/HOW structure
Skip it if
- Users who want the agent to auto-generate CLAUDE.md with no review, since the skill itself says this file should be handwritten (automatic generation is discouraged)
- Projects that need enforced code style, which belongs in linters like eslint or prettier rather than in this file
Try asking
- “Create a CLAUDE.md for this repository”
- “Audit my current CLAUDE.md and report its line count and anti-patterns”
- “Update CLAUDE.md to remove style rules and code snippets”
- “Create src/api/CLAUDE.md as a directory-level guide”

Add it to your agent
Claude Code (all projects)
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip claude-md.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)
mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip claude-md.zip -d .claude/skills/Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Run audit mode first to see what needs trimming before asking for edits.
- Verify that the listed commands actually run, since the skill checks this before writing.
- Put long task-specific instructions in separate files and reference them from CLAUDE.md.
