What it does

This skill teaches an AI coding agent how to write and maintain the CLAUDE.md file, a short project guide that the agent reads at the start of every session. When you ask it to create, update, or audit that file, the agent first looks at your project's existing docs and tech stack, then drafts a concise file that covers what the project is, how it is built and tested, and key gotchas, while avoiding style rules, long code samples, and task-specific instructions. It also explains when to use AGENTS.md instead and asks you to review drafts before anything is written.

Great for

  • Developers setting up Claude Code or another AI agent on an existing repository
  • Teams that want a lean, reviewable onboarding file for AI agents
  • Maintainers auditing a bloated CLAUDE.md that has grown too long

Skip it if

  • Projects where you want the agent to write a long, auto-generated instructions file with no review, since the skill itself says CLAUDE.md should be written manually with careful review
  • Non-developers looking for a general writing tool, because it is specific to agent project configuration

Try asking

  • “Create a CLAUDE.md for this repository from scratch”
  • “Audit my existing CLAUDE.md and report its line count and anti-patterns without changing it”
  • “Update CLAUDE.md to move task-specific instructions into agent_docs/ files”
  • “Set up AGENTS.md for a project that is used by several coding agents”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    claude-md.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip claude-md.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip claude-md.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Say create, update, or audit explicitly so the agent picks the right workflow; audit mode will not edit files.
  • Review the draft before approving it, since the skill expects human review and the agent may not verify every command it writes.
  • Keep the file under about 200 lines and move task-specific guidance into separate docs that CLAUDE.md links to.
