What it does

This skill turns an AI agent into a fast, cheap, read-only helper that searches a codebase for where something lives. When a main agent needs to orient itself in an unfamiliar project or locate code spread across many files, it hands the question to this explorer, which runs several searches and reads in parallel and replies only with a short list of file paths and line ranges. It is restricted to reading and searching tools (Read, Glob, Grep), so it cannot edit files or run commands, and it keeps its bulky search output out of the main agent's working context.

Great for

  • Developers working in large or unfamiliar repositories who want cheaper, faster code location
  • Teams using multi-agent setups where a main agent delegates search to a smaller model

Skip it if

  • Tasks where the exact file or function name is already known, since the skill itself says to skip it then and a direct read is simpler
  • Anyone expecting explanations, fixes or code changes, because the explorer is deliberately limited to citations and cannot edit or run anything

Try asking

  • “Find where the request routing and model selection logic lives in this codebase”
  • “Locate every place that handles user authentication across the project”
  • “My direct grep for the config loader failed, so search more broadly for where configuration is parsed”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Caveman Explore Repo LocatorInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 3 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    caveman-explore.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip caveman-explore.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip caveman-explore.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Use it for cold-start orientation or when a direct search has already failed, not for exact symbol lookups
  • Pair it with a stronger model in the main agent, since the explorer only reports locations and the solver must still reason about them
