What it does

Once installed, the agent can search the arXiv academic preprint archive by topic or paper ID, list matching papers with authors, dates and categories, and save the PDFs into a local folder such as papers/. It then writes short summaries of each paper based on its abstract and can add the papers to a research wiki if one is active in the project. It works by calling a bundled fetcher script if present, or by running inline Python that queries arXiv's public API directly.

Great for

  • Students or researchers building a local reading list on a topic
  • Anyone who wants arXiv papers summarized and saved into a project folder
  • Teams keeping a shared literature folder for a research project

Skip it if

  • Paywalled or non-arXiv journals, since it only queries arXiv (the reason: the source is limited to arXiv's API and PDF links)
  • Redistributing downloaded papers, since copyright terms vary by paper and the skill does not check licences
  • Bulk downloading very large result sets, since the skill adds only a 1-second delay and arXiv may rate-limit heavy use

Try asking

  • “search arxiv for "diffusion models for protein folding" and show the top 10 results”
  • “download paper 2301.07041 into literature/”
  • “fetch arxiv papers on retrieval-augmented generation - max: 20 and save the first result”
  • “get paper pdf for arXiv ID cs/0601001 and summarize the key contributions”
Step-by-step guide: how to use arXiv Paper Search & DownloadInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    arxiv.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip arxiv.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip arxiv.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Give a specific arXiv ID when you know the paper, which skips the search step and is faster and more precise
  • Set dir: to a project folder so downloads stay organized, and check the file sizes reported after download
  • Review summaries against the original abstract, since key contributions are extracted from abstracts only and not from full PDFs
