What it does

Once installed, the agent can keep a shared notebook of markdown notes in a .carnet folder inside your project. It saves findings, gotchas and decisions with a short summary, then searches and reopens them in later sessions instead of rediscovering them. Notes expire after 30 days unless they are read or applied, and stale ones are moved to a trash folder automatically.

Great for

  • Developers who work with coding agents over many sessions and want context to persist between them
  • Teams wanting a shared, plain-text record of debugging findings and project terminology inside a repository

Skip it if

  • Anyone wanting a long-term knowledge base: notes auto-expire after 30 days unless kept or used, and deleted notes are hard-deleted after 7 days.
  • Sensitive projects where notes might capture secrets or private data: the notes are plain files on disk and the skill tells the agent to save proactively, so review what gets stored.

Try asking

  • “Remember this: the iconv-esm types are broken in v0.7, so pin to v0.6”
  • “What did we discuss about the auth middleware design? Check the notebook.”
  • “Find in carnet: esm import issues”
  • “Save this as a note about why we chose SQLite for the cache”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Agent Carnet NotebookInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 3 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    agent-carnet.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip agent-carnet.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip agent-carnet.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Write decisive summaries, since the next reader often decides whether to open the full note from the summary alone.
  • Use the keep flag for notes that must never expire, and call used only when a note actually changed the outcome.
  • Ask the agent to check the notebook before starting related work, so saved context gets reused.
