What it does

Once installed, the agent reviews academic papers the way a peer reviewer would. It reads a paper from an uploaded PDF or a link, extracts its claims, judges the methodology, novelty and significance, checks how it fits with related work, and writes a structured review with strengths, weaknesses and suggestions. The skill also tells the agent to run web searches and fetch related papers to place the work in its research context.

Great for

  • Students who need to understand or critique a study for a class or reading group
  • Researchers preparing a draft peer review or checking their own paper before submission
  • Anyone who wants a quick, structured summary of a paper's strengths and weaknesses

Skip it if

  • Medical, legal or financial decisions based on a paper, since the review is an AI opinion and can miss errors or misread data
  • Formal journal or conference reviews submitted as your own work without checking, since venues may restrict AI-generated reviews
  • Papers that are not in the chat or reachable by link, since the agent cannot verify claims it cannot read

Try asking

  • “Review this paper: [arXiv link] and rate its methodology”
  • “Summarize this study and list its main claims with evidence”
  • “Write a peer review of the attached PDF in conference format”
  • “Analyze how this preprint compares to recent work on the same topic”

  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip academic-paper-review.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip academic-paper-review.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Upload the full PDF rather than just the abstract, so the agent can check figures, tables and experiments.
  • Ask for the executive summary or the detailed review depending on how much time you have.
  • Verify key criticisms yourself against the paper, especially claims about statistics and baselines.
