What it is

WebUI-Aria2 is a browser-based dashboard for aria2, a command-line file downloader. Instead of typing commands, you can add, pause and monitor downloads through a graphical page. It connects to a running aria2 process over its RPC interface, locally or on a remote machine.

  • Start and pause downloads from a browser while aria2 runs in the background
  • Choose which files to download from a torrent or metalink by pausing it first
  • Manage downloads on a remote machine running aria2 with RPC listening on all interfaces
  • Serve the interface from a small Node.js server using node-server.js

Great for

  • People who already use aria2 and want a visual way to manage downloads
  • Users running aria2 on a home server or Raspberry Pi who want a web dashboard
  • Anyone who finds the aria2 command line more power than they need

Not ideal for

  • People who have never used aria2: the README says you must install and start aria2 first, and the interface does not replace it
  • Users who want a standalone desktop downloader with no separate background process
Step-by-step guide: how to use WebUI-Aria2Install, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

How to get it

  1. 1

    Clone and build from source

    You'll need: aria2 · A web browser

    Start aria2 with RPC enabled

    aria2c --enable-rpc --rpc-listen-all

Run the bundled Node.js server (optional, from project folder)

    node node-server.js
  2. 2

    Run it

    • Install aria2 by following the instructions at aria2.github.io
    • Start aria2 in the background with aria2c --enable-rpc --rpc-listen-all
    • Open index.html from the docs folder in a browser, or visit https://ziahamza.github.io/webui-aria2
    • Start downloading files from the dashboard
  3. 3

Get the most out of it

    • Pause a torrent or metalink and use the list icon to select specific files, or start aria2 with --pause-metadata to choose files before download
    • Configure the DirectURL setting to download finished files directly from the dashboard through your own HTTP server
    • Edit src/js/services/configuration.js to change interface settings
    • Use the Docker image for a LAN sandbox, or the ARM32v7 Dockerfile for Raspberry Pi setups

Downloads

Strengths

  • Simple setup: the README says there are no build or installation scripts for the interface itself
  • Works offline after the first visit when hosted online, via Progressive Web App support
  • Open source under the MIT license

Trade-offs

  • Depends entirely on aria2 running with RPC enabled; it is not a standalone downloader
  • The last push in the metadata is from April 2024, so maintenance activity is unclear
  • Exposing RPC to the network (rpc-listen-all) needs care with security, which the README does not discuss in depth
