What it is

Voyager is a Laravel package that adds an admin area to a Laravel application. It provides BREAD tooling (Browse, Read, Edit, Add, Delete) so you can manage database records through a web interface without building those screens by hand. The project is archived, so it no longer receives updates, and its maintainers point to newer alternatives.

  • Add an admin login at /admin to a Laravel app and browse database tables
  • Create or edit records for content such as posts, pages, and categories through generated screens
  • Assign admin privileges to an existing user with a single artisan command

Great for

  • Developers maintaining an existing Laravel 8+ app that already uses Voyager
  • Teams who need a basic admin interface for database records and accept a frozen codebase
  • Developers who want a quick admin panel for a prototype or internal tool

Not ideal for

  • New projects: the README says the project is archived and no longer updated, and recommends FilamentPHP, Wave, Genesis, or Laravel Nova instead
  • Projects on Laravel 6 or 7: the README points to Voyager 1.5 for those versions
  • Anyone who needs security fixes or new Laravel compatibility, since no further updates are planned

How to get it

  1. 1

    Install with a package manager

You'll need: PHP · Composer · Laravel 8 or newer · A database (the README example uses MySQL-style settings)

    Require the package

    composer require tcg/voyager

    Run the installer

    php artisan voyager:install

Run the installer with dummy data (optional)

    php artisan voyager:install --with-dummy

Make an existing user an admin

    php artisan voyager:admin your@email.com
  2. 2

    Run it

    • Create a new Laravel application and set DB_* credentials and APP_URL in .env
    • Run composer require tcg/voyager
    • Run php artisan voyager:install
    • Start the server with php artisan serve
    • Open http://localhost:8000/admin and log in
  3. 3

Get the most out of it

    • Use --with-dummy to get a sample admin account and demo content for exploring the interface
    • Use voyager:admin with --create to add a new admin user from the command line
    • Check the official documentation and cheat sheet linked in the README for BREAD configuration details
    • Review the video tutorial linked in the README for a walkthrough of the features

Downloads

Strengths

  • Installs through Composer and a single artisan installer command
  • Generates admin screens from database tables (BREAD)
  • Has a large existing user base and a wide body of community material, with 11.7k GitHub stars

Trade-offs

  • Archived: no more updates, so future Laravel versions and security issues may not be addressed
  • The README says it is built with Vue and Bootstrap, which may not match a team's current front-end stack
  • Recommended alternatives are more modern, so new users would likely be better served elsewhere
