What it is

This project is a set of pre-built dashboard layouts made with CSS Grid, plus example pages showing how they look with charts. You copy a template's HTML and CSS, then place chart containers in it and connect them to your data. The README says the templates are built to work well on different screen sizes and are designed to be pointed at Keen IO's charting libraries, though they can also be used with other data sources or charts.

  • Copy a layout template and open its HTML file in a text editor to start a dashboard
  • Add a chart to each chart-stage element by giving it an id and pointing a chart library at it
  • Use the demo data files in the repo to see charts working before connecting real data
  • Run the included Dockerfile to serve the example pages locally on port 80

Great for

  • Developers who need a starting layout for an internal analytics dashboard
  • Front-end developers who want responsive grid layouts without writing CSS from scratch
  • Teams already using Keen IO's keen-dataviz.js and keen-analysis.js libraries
  • People who want to see example dashboards for specific domains before choosing one

Not ideal for

  • Non-developers who want a finished dashboard with no coding, since the README assumes editing HTML and wiring up scripts
  • Teams that need active maintenance: the last push was 2021-11-02, so the code may be out of date with current libraries
  • Anyone who wants a hosted analytics product, since this is a set of templates rather than a service
Step-by-step guide: how to use Keen DashboardsInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

How to get it

  1. 1

    Clone and build from source

You'll need: Git · Docker (only if using the Docker option) · Bower and npm (only if you want to develop the project itself)

    Clone the repository

    git clone https://github.com/keen/dashboards.git

    Build the Docker image

    docker build -t keen/dashboards .

    Run the Docker container

    docker run -d -p 80:80 keen/dashboards
  2. 2

    Run it

    • Download the repo as a zip or clone it with git.
    • Browse the layouts at the project's example pages and choose one that fits.
    • Open the template's .html file in a text editor.
    • Add an id to each chart-stage element and paste in the demo data or your own data scripts.
    • Open the HTML file in a browser to see the result.
  3. 3

Get the most out of it

    • Use the demo-data folder first to confirm charts render before connecting your own data.
    • Check the examples folder for domain-specific layouts close to your use case.
    • Set a fixed height on each chart container in your stylesheet, as the README says charts need one.
    • Follow the README's advice to pull from upstream regularly if you maintain a fork.

Downloads

Strengths

  • Uses CSS Grid, so layouts adapt to different screen sizes with little custom CSS
  • Ships with multiple ready-made layouts and domain examples to start from
  • MIT license allows reuse in commercial and personal projects

Trade-offs

  • The last push was in November 2021 and the README references older setup steps, so parts may be outdated
  • Setup requires editing HTML and attaching scripts by hand, which takes some web development knowledge
  • The README is tied to Keen IO's libraries and says templates are streamlined for them, so other charting tools need extra work
