What it is

go-admin is a starter project for building admin systems, the back-office screens used to manage users, menus, roles and settings. The backend is written in Go using the Gin web framework, and the front end is Vue, with a choice of Element UI, Arco Design or Ant Design. It bundles features such as JWT login, role-based access control through Casbin, a code generator and a form builder so you don't start from scratch.

  • Start a new admin dashboard with user, department, role and menu management already in place
  • Generate basic management pages from an existing database table using the code generation tool
  • Use the form builder to lay out custom admin pages by dragging components
  • Add a scheduled task or service monitoring page to an internal tool

Great for

  • Go developers who want a ready-made admin backend with login and permissions
  • Teams building an internal management tool who want a Vue front end with a UI library they already use
  • Students or learners studying how a Gin + GORM + Vue admin system is structured
  • Developers who want a code generator to scaffold basic create/read/update/delete pages from database tables

Not ideal for

  • People who want a no-code tool; the project requires running a Go backend and a Node front end
  • Projects that need proven test coverage, since the README lists unit tests as a TODO
  • Non-technical users who only want a finished app to use without any setup
Step-by-step guide: how to use go-adminInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

How to get it

  1. 1

    Clone and build from source

You'll need: Go (README environment note says go 1.27.1) · Node.js v22+ (v24 LTS recommended) · pnpm v9+ · Git · C compiler (gcc) for the SQLite build

    Clone the backend repository

    git clone https://github.com/go-admin-team/go-admin.git

    Clone the front-end repository

    git clone https://github.com/go-admin-team/go-admin-ui.git

Build with SQLite support from the backend folder

    go build -tags sqlite3

    Install front-end dependencies

    pnpm install
  2. 2

    Run it

    • Run the database migration: ./go-admin migrate -c config/settings.sqlite.yml
    • Start the API server: ./go-admin server -c config/settings.sqlite.yml
    • In the go-admin-ui folder, run pnpm dev to start the UI
    • Sign in with admin / 123456 (the default account shown in the README)
  3. 3

Get the most out of it

    • Edit config/settings.yml to point the app at MySQL, PostgreSQL or SQL Server instead of SQLite
    • Use the code generation tool to create business pages from your own database tables
    • Use the form builder to design custom page layouts
    • Review the Swagger documentation support (based on swaggo) for API docs generated from code
    • Follow the official tutorials at go-admin.pro for permission and menu configuration

Downloads

Strengths

  • Covers common admin needs out of the box, including RBAC, JWT authentication and operation logs
  • Supports multiple database backends through GORM and offers a SQLite quick start with no separate database install
  • Offers a choice of three front-end UI libraries and has a documentation site and video tutorials

Trade-offs

  • The README lists unit tests as a TODO, so the code has limited automated test coverage as stated
  • Setup involves two separate repositories (backend and UI), a Go toolchain, Node.js and pnpm, and the SQLite path needs a C compiler
  • Documentation and tutorials are primarily in Chinese; the English README is brief
