What it is
MCP for Unity is a bridge between AI assistants and the Unity game engine editor. Using the Model Context Protocol, it gives an AI assistant tools to create scenes and GameObjects, edit C# scripts, manage assets, run tests, and build, so you can describe changes in plain language. It is free and MIT-licensed.
- Create a cube at the origin and add a Rigidbody by prompting the assistant
- Edit C# scripts from your AI client while the project is open in Unity
- Manage and organize assets through natural-language requests
- Run tests and profile from the assistant
- Build the project as part of an automated workflow
Great for
- Unity developers who want to prototype scenes by describing them in plain language
- Developers who already use an MCP-compatible AI client such as Claude, Cursor, or VS Code
- Solo game developers automating repetitive editor tasks
- Teams experimenting with LLM-assisted asset and script editing
Not ideal for
- People who need fully predictable, hand-controlled editor changes, since AI-generated edits can be wrong and need review
- Projects on Unity versions outside the stated 2021.3 LTS to 6.x range
- Anyone unwilling to run a local Python-based helper alongside the editor
How to get it
- 1
Install with a package manager
You'll need: Unity 2021.3 LTS to 6.x · Python 3.10+ · uv (https://docs.astral.sh/uv/) · An MCP-compatible AI client
Install via Unity Package Manager (Add from git URL)
https://github.com/CoplayDev/unity-mcp.git?path=/MCPForUnity#mainAlternative install via OpenUPM
openupm add com.coplaydev.unity-mcp - 2
Run it
- Install the package in Unity through Package Manager using the git URL
- Open Window → MCP for Unity → Configure All Detected Clients
- Send a prompt such as 'Create a cube at the origin and add a Rigidbody.'

Get the most out of it
- Use Tool Groups (vfx, animation, ui, testing, etc.) to focus the available tools
- Use Multi-Instance Routing if you run more than one Unity instance
- Enable Roslyn script validation for checking edited C# code
- Pin to a specific release tag such as #v10.0.0 if you need stability
- Read the v10 Migration notes if upgrading from an earlier version

Strengths
- Works with many MCP clients, per the README, including Claude, Cursor, VS Code, and Gemini CLI
- Free and open source under the MIT license
- Actively maintained, with recent releases through v10.3.0
Trade-offs
- Requires Python 3.10+ via uv in addition to Unity, adding setup steps
- AI-driven edits to scenes and scripts can be incorrect and should be reviewed
- README is truncated, so detailed behavior and limits are only partly documented here
