What it is
This is a JavaScript plugin for jQuery that adds a file upload box to a web page. Visitors can choose several files, drag them in, see progress bars and previews, and send them to a server. It works with any server-side language that accepts standard HTML form uploads. The repository is archived, so it no longer receives updates.
- Let users select several files at once and upload them with a progress bar
- Show image, audio or video previews before a file is sent
- Upload large files in chunks, or resume an aborted upload, in browsers that support the Blob API
- Resize images in the browser before upload, where the required JS APIs are available
Great for
- Web developers adding file upload to an existing jQuery-based site
- Teams with a PHP, Python, Ruby, Java or Node.js backend that accepts standard form uploads
- Projects that need progress bars and image previews before upload
- Developers who want a plugin without Flash or other browser plugins
Not ideal for
- New projects that want a modern framework: the repository is archived, so it gets no further updates and is built on jQuery 1.7+ and older browser support
- Anyone who needs an officially supported product: the README says there is no official support channel
- Sites that must support very old browsers without careful testing: the README lists browser versions that are now far outdated
How to get it
- 1
Install with a package manager
You'll need: jQuery 1.7+ · jQuery UI widget factory 1.9+ (included in the project)
Install from NPM
npm install blueimp-file-upload - 2
Run it
- Install the package with npm.
- Include jquery.fileupload.js from node_modules in your page after jQuery.
- Call $('#fileupload').fileupload() on your file upload form.
- Set up a server endpoint that accepts the form upload, following the wiki setup guide.
- 3
Get the most out of it
- Read the SECURITY.md file to configure your web server safely for uploads
- Use the Options and API wiki pages to customize behavior and callbacks
- Add the optional Load Image library to enable image previews and resizing
- Use the Iframe Transport and cross-domain guide if uploading to a different domain
Downloads
Strengths
- Supports multiple selection, drag and drop, progress bars and previews in one widget
- Works with any server platform that accepts standard HTML form file uploads
- MIT licensed, with a large user base (about 30,000 stars)
Trade-offs
- Archived repository: no further maintenance or security fixes are expected from upstream
- Depends on jQuery and an older widget setup, and much of the detailed guidance lives on an external wiki
- Server-side security and upload validation are your responsibility; the README points to separate SECURITY and VULNERABILITIES documents
