What it is

This project is a collection of Markdown 'skills' that describe how experienced engineers approach each phase of building software, from defining a spec to shipping. You install them into an AI coding agent such as Claude Code, Cursor, or Codex so the agent follows those workflows and quality checks more consistently. Slash commands like /spec, /plan, /build, /test, /review, and /ship map to lifecycle stages.

  • Run /spec to define a feature before any code is written
  • Use /plan to break work into small tasks, then /build to implement one slice at a time
  • Install the code-review-and-quality skill to get a five-axis review before merging
  • Use /webperf to audit web performance of a project

Great for

  • Developers who already use an AI coding agent and want more structured, test-driven output
  • Teams wanting a shared set of engineering checklists applied across AI-assisted work
  • Solo developers who want a spec-first, plan-first workflow from their agent
  • People using one of the supported agents listed in the README who want a native integration

Not ideal for

  • People who do not use AI coding agents, since the skills are instructions for those agents rather than a standalone program
  • Beginners looking for a general programming course; the skills assume familiarity with software engineering practices
  • Users of agents not covered by the README, who would need to adapt the Markdown files themselves
Step-by-step guide: how to use Agent SkillsInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

How to get it

  1. 1

    Install with a package manager

You'll need: Node.js (required for npx skills CLI; version not stated in README) · An AI coding agent such as Claude Code, Cursor, or Codex

Install all skills with the skills CLI

    npx skills add addyosmani/agent-skills

    Browse skills before installing

    npx skills add addyosmani/agent-skills --list

Install the Claude Code marketplace plugin

    /plugin install agent-skills@addy-agent-skills
  2. 2

    Run it

    • Install the skills using the npx command or your agent's native integration
    • Open your agent in a project folder
    • Run /spec to define what you want to build
    • Run /plan, then /build to implement in small steps
  3. 3

Get the most out of it

    • Use /build auto to generate a plan and implement every task in one approved pass, while keeping tests and per-task commits
    • Install a whole-repo integration rather than single skills so shared references/ files are available
    • Use the namespaced form /agent-skills:review in Claude Code when a built-in command has the same name
    • Use the per-agent setup docs linked in the README, such as docs/cursor-setup.md, for tool-specific configuration

Downloads

Strengths

  • Covers the full development lifecycle, not just one task
  • Installs across many agents through the skills CLI or native plugins, according to the README
  • MIT licensed and actively maintained, with a recent push date

Trade-offs

  • Installing a single skill with npx omits shared reference files, which the README says can limit some skills (tracked in issue #361)
  • Several integrations need manual setup, such as Cursor and Windsurf, and some slash commands only exist in Claude Code
  • Some commands behave differently across agents, so results will depend on which agent you use
