How to use the Xiaohongshu Video and Note Publisher agent skill
Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data
This skill lets an AI agent publish videos and image-based notes to Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book) by calling the sau command-line tool from the social-auto-upload project. It is for people who already run social-auto-upload, or are willing to install it, and want repeatable Xiaohongshu posting. After this guide you will know what the skill does, how to install it, how to phrase a request so the agent uses it, and what to check when something fails.
Quick start
- 1Install social-auto-upload. Set up the project and its dependencies, then install Chromium for patchright using the commands in the runtime requirements reference.
- 2Confirm sau runs. Run sau xiaohongshu --help in your shell, or the uv or venv variant if that is how you installed it.
- 3Install the skill. Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ or a project's .claude/skills/, or upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
- 4Log in the account. Run sau xiaohongshu login --account with your chosen account name and scan the QR code.
- 5Check the cookie. Run sau xiaohongshu check --account to confirm it returns valid.
- 6Ask the agent to publish. Describe the video or image note, its title and tags, and the account in plain language.
What is an agent skill, and what does this one do?
An agent skill is a folder of instructions and supporting files that an AI agent loads when a task matches its description. This skill, named xiaohongshu-upload, tells the agent to work through the sau command rather than reading the project's source code first.
It covers four actions: logging in to a Xiaohongshu account and saving a cookie file for it, checking whether that cookie is still valid, uploading and publishing a video, and uploading and publishing an image note. Video posts use a title, description and tags; image notes use a title, note body and tags.
- login: generates or refreshes the cookie for a named account
- check: reports whether the cookie is valid or invalid
- upload-video: publishes a Xiaohongshu video
- upload-note: publishes a Xiaohongshu image note
What you need before installing the skill
The skill assumes social-auto-upload is already installed and that the sau command can be run in your shell. Without that, the skill cannot do anything. The project's runtime notes say the Python environment and dependencies must be set up, and that Chromium must be installed for patchright. The recommended install step in the project's notes is run from the project root.
You also need a Xiaohongshu account that you can log in to through the QR-code flow.
- social-auto-upload installed, with the sau command available
- Python environment and dependencies required by social-auto-upload
- Chromium installed for patchright (see references/runtime-requirements.md)
- A Xiaohongshu account you own or are authorised to post for
uv pip install -e .Install the skill from the ZIP
Download the ZIP for this skill from this page and unzip it. Place the folder in one of two locations. For a personal install available across projects, put it in ~/.claude/skills/. For a single project, put it in that project's .claude/skills/ folder.
If you use the Claude apps instead, open Settings, go to Capabilities, and upload the skill under Skills.
- Personal: ~/.claude/skills/
- Per project: .claude/skills/ inside the project folder
- Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload
Check that the sau command works
Before asking the agent for anything, confirm that the command runs. The project's notes list three ways to call it, depending on how you installed it. If sau is already on your PATH, run it directly. If you have a virtual environment, activate it first. You can also use uv run.
If none of these work, the troubleshooting reference says the project may not be installed in the current environment yet.
- sau xiaohongshu --help (if sau is on your PATH)
- uv run sau xiaohongshu --help (if you use uv)
- On Windows, .\.venv\Scripts\sau.exe xiaohongshu --help after activating or calling the executable directly
sau xiaohongshu --helpLog in and check the cookie for an account
Each account name you choose gets its own cookie file, so you can keep several Xiaohongshu accounts separate. The name is your own label, such as a brand or creator name, and is not limited to one fixed value.
Login opens the QR-code flow. If the login produces a local QR image, the agent is instructed to show or send that image to you directly rather than only giving you the file path. Use check at any time to see whether the saved cookie still works. It returns valid or invalid. If it returns invalid, log in again.
- login creates or refreshes the cookie for the account name you give
- check returns valid when the cookie works and invalid when it is missing or expired
- You can pass --headless or --headed to choose the browser mode when you specify one
sau xiaohongshu login --account <account>
sau xiaohongshu check --account <account>Publish a video or an image note
For a video, the minimum inputs are the account, the video file and a title. Description, tags, a thumbnail and a schedule time are optional. For an image note, the minimum inputs are the account, the images and a title; the note body is optional.
Scheduling is only used when you explicitly ask for it. The time format is YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM. If you do not want a scheduled post, leave out the schedule option and the post is published immediately.
- Video required: --account, --file, --title
- Video optional: --desc, --tags, --schedule, --thumbnail, --debug, --headless or --headed
- Image note required: --account, --images, --title
- Image note optional: --note
sau xiaohongshu upload-video \
--account <account> \
--file <video-path> \
--title "<title>" \
[--desc "<description>"] \
[--tags tag1,tag2] \
[--schedule "YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM"]How to ask the agent to use the skill
You do not need to name the skill. Describe the Xiaohongshu task in plain language and mention the account and the file. The skill's description matches requests about Xiaohongshu login, cookie checks, video upload or image-note publishing, in an environment where sau is installed.
Be specific about what you want. If you want a scheduled post, say so and give the time, because the agent is told to use scheduling only when asked. If you want to see the browser, say headed; if you want no window, say headless.
- "Check whether my xiaohongshu cookie for the account brand_a is still valid."
- "Publish /videos/intro.mp4 to Xiaohongshu under account brand_a with the title below and tags travel, japan."
- "Post these five images as a Xiaohongshu note on account creator_b, title and body attached, and schedule it for 2025-06-01 09:00."
- "Log in to Xiaohongshu for account creator_c and show me the QR code."
What people use it for
- Batch-posting the same video to several named accounts, each with its own cookie file.
- Publishing image notes with a title, body and tags from a set of local images.
- Checking cookie status on a schedule before a campaign so expired logins are caught early.
- Scheduling a Xiaohongshu video for a specific time when you explicitly request it.
- Scripting a repeatable publishing workflow using the example shell and Python files included with the skill.
Frequently asked questions
Is the xiaohongshu-upload skill free?
The skill is released under the MIT licence, as listed on this page. The skill itself is a set of instruction and reference files, but it needs the social-auto-upload project and its dependencies installed, and you need your own Xiaohongshu account.
Do I need social-auto-upload installed to use this skill?
Yes. The skill is built around the sau command from social-auto-upload and states that it cannot work without it. Install the project and confirm sau xiaohongshu --help runs before you install the skill.
How do I install the xiaohongshu-upload skill?
Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for a personal install, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder. In the Claude apps you can instead upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
Why does sau say invalid when I check my account?
The check command returns invalid when the cookie is missing or has expired. Run sau xiaohongshu login --account with the same account name to refresh it, then check again.
Can this skill post to TikTok, Douyin or other platforms?
No. The skill only covers Xiaohongshu, through the video upload and image-note upload commands. Other platforms are not covered by this skill.
Is it safe to let an agent run these commands?
The skill runs scripts and uses the network. It automates logins and publishing on a third-party platform, so only use it on accounts you own or have the right to post for, and check that the action complies with Xiaohongshu's terms.

Our verdict
This skill suits creators, marketing teams and developers who already run social-auto-upload and want an agent to log in, check and publish Xiaohongshu videos and image notes across named accounts. It is not useful without the sau command installed, and it does not cover other platforms. If you have not set up social-auto-upload or only need to post to a different network, pick another tool.
