How to use the Write Without Slop agent skill

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

Write Without Slop is an agent skill named ce-noslop. It teaches an AI agent to rewrite, check or draft prose so it reads plainly on the first pass and carries none of the stylistic habits people associate with AI-generated writing, while keeping every fact in the source. This guide is for anyone who has not used agent skills before and wants a working setup. By the end you will know how to install the skill, how to ask for each of its three modes, and what to expect from it.

Quick start

  1. 1Download the ZIP. Get the ce-noslop ZIP from this page.
  2. 2Unzip the skill. Unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for a personal install or into .claude/skills/ in a project.
  3. 3Or upload in the Claude apps. In the Claude apps, go to Settings → Capabilities → Skills and upload the skill.
  4. 4Make a request. Ask in plain language, for example to make a draft plainer or to check it for AI writing tells.
  5. 5Choose a mode if needed. Add mode:author, mode:edit or mode:detect to set the mode explicitly.
  6. 6Review the output. Check that every fact, number, name and quote from your input is still there.

What the ce-noslop skill makes the agent do

The skill gives the agent three modes. In edit mode it rewrites only the sentences that fail its tests and returns the text. In detect mode it reads the text, names each pattern it finds, quotes the line and suggests a fix in a few words, without rewriting anything. In author mode it holds its tests while you write, or drafts new text from material you supply.

Every fact, number, name, quote and citation from the input should survive the rewrite. The agent should not add claims that were not in the source. Code blocks, quotes, links and identifiers are left alone unless you ask for them to be changed.

  • Edit: rewrite only the failing sentences and return the text.
  • Detect: list each pattern with the quoted line and a short fix; no rewrite.
  • Author: draft new text from supplied content under the same tests.

Install the ce-noslop skill

Download the ZIP of the skill from this page and unzip it. Put the resulting folder in one of two places. For a personal install that applies everywhere, use ~/.claude/skills/. For a single project, use the .claude/skills/ folder inside that project.

If you use the Claude apps instead of files on disk, upload the skill under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

  • Personal install: unzip into ~/.claude/skills/
  • Project install: unzip into .claude/skills/ inside your project
  • Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload the skill

Trigger the skill with natural requests

You do not need a special command. Ask in plain language. The skill's description says it applies when you ask to make writing plainer or free of those tells, to check writing for them, or when drafting from supplied content.

You can also name the mode explicitly with a mode token, using one of author, edit or detect. Without a mode token, a request with no draft means author, an imperative on a draft means edit, and a question about a draft means detect.

  • Make this paragraph plainer without changing any facts.
  • Check this announcement for generic, inflated phrasing and list each one with a fix.
  • Draft a short release note from these notes, keeping every number exactly as written.
  • mode:detect Review the attached design doc for AI writing tells.
mode:detect [text, file path, or nothing]

Examples of what to expect

In edit mode, a sentence that already reads plainly stays exactly as written, so running the skill again on its own output should change nothing. Only sentences that fail a test are rewritten. Edit mode returns a one-line summary of changes only when you ask for one.

In detect mode, the output is a list. Each entry names the pattern, quotes the line and gives a short fix. The skill does not claim to know whether a model wrote a text.

What the skill needs and how it runs

The skill lists no required tools or packages. It does not run scripts and does not use the network. It reads its own reference files, which are references/patterns.md, references/terminology.md and SKILL.md, and works on the text you give it.

  • Requires: nothing listed
  • Runs scripts: no
  • Uses network: no
  • Licence: MIT

Limits and safety notes

Because the skill has no scripts and no network access, it cannot check facts against outside sources. It keeps the facts you supply, but it does not verify them. Rewrites can change phrasing even when facts are kept, so do not use it on text where exact wording is legally or contractually fixed.

For channel-specific marketing copy, the skill itself says to use the ce-promote skill instead.

  • Do not use it on legally or contractually fixed wording.
  • Use ce-promote for channel-specific marketing copy.
  • It does not detect whether a model wrote a text.

Tips for better results

Give the agent the source material along with the request, so it has the facts to keep. For drafts, list the numbers, names and quotes you need preserved. Run detect first if you want to see what would change before accepting an edit.

  • Paste or point to the full text so every fact is available to keep.
  • Run detect before edit to review findings first.
  • Ask for a one-line change summary only when you need one.

What people use it for

  • Making a first draft of a blog post or internal memo read more directly.
  • Reviewing docs or announcements for generic, inflated phrasing before publishing.
  • Drafting a summary from meeting notes or supplied content while keeping every figure.
  • Checking a long document for repeated stylistic patterns and getting a fix for each one.

Frequently asked questions

How do I install the ce-noslop skill?

Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for a personal install, or into .claude/skills/ inside a project. In the Claude apps, you can instead upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

Does the ce-noslop skill require anything else to run?

The skill lists no required tools. It does not run scripts and does not use the network, so it works from the text you provide and its own reference files.

Is the ce-noslop skill free to use?

The skill is released under the MIT licence, as listed on this page. Check the licence file in the repository for the full terms.

What is the difference between edit, detect and author modes?

Edit rewrites only the sentences that fail its tests and returns the text. Detect names each pattern, quotes the line and suggests a fix without rewriting. Author drafts new text from supplied content under the same tests.

Will the skill detect whether ChatGPT or another model wrote my text?

No. The skill explicitly never claims to tell whether a model wrote a text. It only checks for stylistic patterns and clarity.

Should I use ce-noslop or ce-promote for marketing copy?

Use ce-promote for channel-specific marketing copy. The ce-noslop skill itself directs that work to ce-promote.

Our verdict

Use this skill if you want a draft to read plainer on the first pass, want a team to check docs or announcements for generic, inflated phrasing, or are drafting from notes and need clear sentences that keep every fact. Pick something else for channel-specific marketing copy, for legally or contractually fixed wording, or if you need a tool that claims to detect AI-written text.
