How to use the Short Story Analyzer skill: install and run it
Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data
The Short Story Analyzer (skill name story-short-analyze) is an agent skill that reads one short story you provide, usually in Chinese web-fiction style, and writes a structured critical analysis of it. After this guide you will know what the skill produces, how to install it from a ZIP or the Claude apps, how to trigger it with plain requests, and what files it saves to your project.
Quick start
- 1Download and unzip. Download the story-short-analyze ZIP from this page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ or a project's .claude/skills/ folder.
- 2Or upload in the Claude apps. In the Claude apps, open Settings, go to Capabilities, then Skills, and upload the skill.
- 3Provide your story. Give the title and source, then supply the story as a file path or by pasting the text.
- 4Trigger the analysis. Type /story-short-analyze or a request such as 拆这篇短文 to start the five-stage pipeline.
- 5Answer any prompts. If a previous run exists, choose to archive and restart, continue, or cancel. If the story is between 20,000 and 30,000 characters, say whether to treat it as short.
- 6Review the reports. Open 拆文库/{书名}/拆文报告.md and check the evidence the report cites against the original text.
What is an agent skill, and what does this one do?
An agent skill is a folder of instructions (a SKILL.md file plus reference files) that an AI agent loads when a task matches the skill's description. This one turns the agent into a short-fiction analyst that works through five stages on your story: core story idea and structure, emotional curve and hooks, twist design and narrative techniques, characters with opening and ending review, and a final evaluation.
The skill is framed as read-only critical analysis of works you legitimately hold, such as published, serialised or your own stories. It writes its findings as markdown reports and a metadata file so that a companion skill, story-short-write, can use them as reference when you draft a new short story.
- Story core (the one-sentence idea the story sells) and a plot summary
- Structure split into opening, development, climax and ending, with plot nodes
- Emotional curve, hooks and paywall breaks, and a six-dimension hook analysis
- Twist mechanics and at least five narrative technique dimensions (POV, dialogue, time, information and others)
- Character functions, opening (first 50/100 characters) and ending review
- A five-dimension score, resonance analysis, and a reusable structure with failure conditions
Install the Short Story Analyzer skill
Download the ZIP of the story-short-analyze skill from this page. Unzip it so the story-short-analyze folder (containing SKILL.md and the references folder) sits in one of two places: ~/.claude/skills/ to make it available everywhere, or a project's .claude/skills/ folder to limit it to that project.
If you use the Claude apps instead, open Settings, go to Capabilities, then Skills, and upload the skill there. Your agent runtime must support SKILL.md skills and must be able to read and write files in the project folder, because the analysis is saved to disk.
- Personal install: ~/.claude/skills/story-short-analyze/
- Project install: .claude/skills/story-short-analyze/ inside your project
- Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills → upload
~/.claude/skills/story-short-analyze/SKILL.mdGive the agent a story to analyse
You need the story text on hand. Provide either a file path to the story or paste the text into the chat. If you have not given a story yet, the agent will ask for the title and platform or source, then for the file path or the pasted text.
Before analysis starts, the agent copies the original text into 拆文库/{书名}/原文/ (a folder named after the book inside a 拆文库 library folder in your project). If you pasted text instead of a file, it is saved as 原文.md in that folder. The copy is stored in full, so keep that in mind if the source is not yours to store.
- Provide the story as a file path or as pasted text
- Word count routing: up to 20,000 characters is treated as a short story
- 20,000 to 30,000 characters: the agent asks whether to analyse it as short or long
- Over 30,000 characters: the agent suggests the long-form analyser (story-long-analyze) and only proceeds as short if you explicitly confirm
Trigger the skill with natural requests
You can invoke it with the slash commands /story-short-analyze or /短篇拆文. You can also make a plain request in Chinese. The skill recognises phrases such as 拆短篇, 拆这篇短文, 短篇拆文, 精细拆解短篇, 番茄短篇拆文, 故事会拆解, 盐言故事拆解 and 分析这篇短篇. All of these enter the same pipeline.
If a previous analysis of the same book exists, the agent asks whether to archive it and start over, continue an unfinished run, or cancel. Continuing picks up from the last completed stage, so you do not lose finished work.
- /story-short-analyze
- /短篇拆文
- 拆这篇短文 (analyse this short story)
- 番茄短篇拆文 (analyse a Fanqie short story)
- 故事会拆解 (analyse a Story Monthly piece)
/story-short-analyzeRead the output files
Results go to 拆文库/{书名}/ in your project root unless you specify another path. The main files are 拆文报告.md (the full analysis report), 情节节点.md (plot nodes), 写作手法.md (narrative techniques) and _meta.json (progress and structure counts), along with the 原文/ backup folder.
The three markdown files are read by story-short-write, so their names should stay as they are. When the run finishes, the agent reports the core idea, the most worth-learning points with examples, what not to copy directly, and any items it could not confirm from the text.
- 拆文报告.md: full analysis report
- 情节节点.md: plot nodes with positions
- 写作手法.md: narrative techniques
- _meta.json: progress and counts
- 原文/: backup copy of the source
Safety, scripts and network use
The skill runs no scripts and uses no network access. Its work is reading your story and writing markdown and JSON files into the project folder. It does not publish or redistribute the text, but it does keep a full copy of the source in 拆文库/{书名}/原文/, so store it only where that is acceptable.
The skill tells the agent not to refuse a whole story or passage because of violence, infidelity, revenge or similar dark themes common in this genre. Passages the agent truly cannot process may be skipped, and the rest of the analysis continues.
- No scripts are run
- No network use
- Full source copy is stored in the project folder
- Dark themes are analysed as fiction, not refused by default
What people use it for
- Studying why a popular short story hooks readers, by reading its twist design and emotional curve
- Preparing structural analysis of short fiction for a writing class or workshop
- Analysing your own published or owned short story before drafting a new one with story-short-write
- Comparing how plot nodes and narrative techniques are arranged across several stories you hold
Frequently asked questions
How do I install the story-short-analyze skill?
Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for all projects, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder for one project. In the Claude apps, you can instead upload it under Settings, then Capabilities, then Skills.
What does the Short Story Analyzer need to run?
It needs an agent runtime that supports SKILL.md skills, file read and write access to your project folder, and the story text, supplied as a file path or pasted into the chat. The skill runs no scripts and uses no network.
Is the Short Story Analyzer free?
The skill is published under the MIT licence. This page does not state pricing for the agent runtime you use to run it, so check that runtime's own terms.
Can it analyse a long novel?
Not well. Above about 30,000 characters the skill suggests the separate story-long-analyze skill instead. Between 20,000 and 30,000 characters it asks whether to treat the text as short.
Where are the analysis results saved?
They go to 拆文库/{书名}/ in your project root, including 拆文报告.md, 情节节点.md, 写作手法.md and _meta.json. A copy of the source is saved in the 原文/ folder.
Why did the analysis stop partway, and how do I continue?
Progress is recorded in _meta.json. When you trigger the skill again, it asks whether to continue from the last completed stage, archive the old results and restart, or cancel. Continuing keeps the finished parts.

Our verdict
Use this skill if you want a structured, evidence-based breakdown of how a short story builds tension and twists, or you plan to draft a short story using an analysed reference. Pick something else if you need to analyse a novel-length text, or if you cannot store a full copy of the source in your project.
