How to use the SEO Content Quality Analysis agent skill

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

The seo-content skill is an agent skill for Claude Code and other SKILL.md-compatible agents that reviews a web page's writing against Google's published quality guidance. It is for SEO specialists, writers, editors and site owners who want a quick content-quality check rather than a full technical audit. After this guide you will know what the skill does, how to install it, how to ask for it in plain language and what it needs to run.

Quick start

  1. 1Download the ZIP. Download the seo-content ZIP from this page. It contains LICENSE.txt and SKILL.md.
  2. 2Unzip into a skills folder. Unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder for one project.
  3. 3Or upload in the Claude apps. In the Claude apps, go to Settings, then Capabilities, then Skills, and upload the ZIP.
  4. 4Ask for a content review. Make a natural request such as reviewing a page's content quality, optionally including the URL.
  5. 5Clean a draft if needed. For AI-typical phrasing or hidden characters, run content_humanize.py on your own draft with Python.
  6. 6Treat the scores as heuristics. Read the results as quality indicators and validate GEO or AEO findings against Google's official guidance and Search Console.

What the seo-content skill makes the agent do

Once installed, the agent uses Google's three-question 'Who / How / Why' test as its starting point. It checks whether the page shows who wrote it, how it was made and why it exists. It then looks at experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness (E-E-A-T), along with readability, content structure and word count.

The skill can also clean a draft. Using a bundled script, it flags stock AI-style phrasing and removes invisible Unicode characters. It covers content only and does not run full technical SEO checks such as crawling, speed or schema.

  • Content review: who, how and why signals, E-E-A-T, readability, structure and word count
  • Draft cleanup: swaps AI-typical phrases one-for-one and removes hidden characters
  • Scope: content only, not technical SEO
  • Scores are heuristics, not Google's internal ranking signals

Install the skill from the ZIP or the Claude apps

Option one is to download the ZIP from this page and unzip it into your personal skills folder, ~/.claude/skills/. To make the skill available only inside one project, unzip it into that project's .claude/skills/ folder instead.

Option two is to upload the ZIP in the Claude apps. Go to Settings, then Capabilities, then Skills, and upload the file there. The package includes LICENSE.txt and SKILL.md.

  • Personal install: ~/.claude/skills/
  • Project install: .claude/skills/ inside your project folder
  • Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Trigger the skill with natural requests

You do not need a special command. Ask for what you want in ordinary words, such as asking the agent to analyze a page's content quality or to clean up a draft. The skill accepts an optional URL argument for analysis.

For draft cleanup, requests such as 'humanize this', 'remove watermarks' or 'clean up this draft' lead the agent to the cleanup script. Run it on content you own or have permission to edit.

  • 'Review the content quality of this page: [url]'
  • 'Check whether this article shows who wrote it and why it exists'
  • 'Clean up this draft'
  • 'Humanize this and remove watermarks'

Run the draft cleanup script yourself

The cleanup script is named content_humanize.py and runs through the bundled claude-seo runner. You can point it at a file and write the result to a new file, or pipe text in and read JSON output. Python is required for this script.

The JSON output logs two passes. The invisible_removed field records removed invisible characters, such as zero-width codepoints, directional marks and Unicode tag characters. Emoji sequences are preserved. The changes field records the one-to-one phrasing swaps, such as 'delve into' to 'explore'. Nothing is paraphrased or added.

  • invisible_removed: zero-width, directional and Unicode tag characters, with exotic spaces normalized
  • changes: conservative 1:1 swaps from the replacement table
  • Emoji sequences such as ZWJ and variation selectors next to emoji are kept
"${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/scripts/claude-seo" run content_humanize.py draft.md -o cleaned.md cat draft.md | "${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/scripts/claude-seo" run content_humanize.py --json

Read the results with the right expectations

The skill's word count minimums are topical coverage floors, not targets. Google has said word count is not a direct ranking factor, so a shorter page that fully answers the query can be the stronger one. Flesch Reading Ease is a useful accessibility proxy, not a ranking factor, so treat it as a quality indicator.

The skill is also clear that statistical watermarks, which live in word choice rather than codepoints, cannot be reliably detected or removed by any tool. Reports should say so.

  • Word count floors: homepage 500, service page 800, blog post 1,500, product page 300+ (400+ for complex products), location page 500-600
  • Flesch Reading Ease target: 60-70 for a general audience
  • Scores are heuristics, not Google-internal signals

Safety notes: scripts and network access

This skill runs scripts and uses the network. The agent may fetch a URL for analysis, so it needs internet access for that. It reads reference files under the claude-seo plugin root, so that files must be accessible to the agent.

The skill asks you to use the cleanup only on your own content. It says to decline requests to strip provenance from content the user does not own. Do not run the script on third-party material without permission.

  • Runs scripts: yes, including the bundled claude-seo runner and content_humanize.py
  • Uses network: yes, if the agent fetches a URL
  • Needs Python for content_humanize.py
  • Do not use the cleanup on content you do not own or have permission to edit

What people use it for

  • Checking whether a blog post shows an author, a process and a clear reason to exist
  • Reviewing a service page for E-E-A-T signals such as contact details, reviews and date stamps
  • Cleaning a writer's draft of AI-typical phrasing and invisible characters before editing
  • Preparing a page for AI citation readiness with clear statements, headings and lists

Frequently asked questions

How do I install the seo-content agent skill?

Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder. You can also upload the ZIP in the Claude apps under Settings, then Capabilities, then Skills.

What do I need to run the seo-content skill?

You need Claude Code or another SKILL.md-compatible agent, the claude-seo plugin scripts including the bundled runner, and Python for the content_humanize.py script. The agent also needs read access to reference files under the plugin root and internet access if it fetches a URL.

Is the seo-content skill free to use?

The skill is released under the MIT licence, as stated in its LICENSE.txt and metadata. The licence terms are in the repository root LICENSE file on GitHub.

Does this skill check technical SEO like crawling or page speed?

No. The skill covers content only and explicitly excludes technical SEO audits such as crawling, speed or schema. Use a dedicated technical tool for those checks.

Will this skill guarantee higher rankings?

No. No tool can guarantee rankings, and the skill's scores are heuristics rather than Google's internal signals. Use the results as quality indicators, not as a ranking promise.

Why does the cleanup script not catch every AI-written sentence?

The script makes deterministic passes only: it removes invisible characters and swaps listed AI-typical phrases one-for-one. Statistical watermarks live in word choice and cannot be reliably detected or removed by any tool.
