How to use the Seedance Director Interview agent skill
Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data
The seedance-interview skill is an add-on for an AI coding or chat agent that acts like a film director's assistant before any video prompt is written. It is for people who have a vague feeling for a video, a rough concept, or precise shot direction they want carried through. After this guide you will know what the skill does, how to install it, how to ask for it in plain language, and what it needs to work.
Quick start
- 1Get the skill folder. Download the ZIP from the skill page on this site and unzip it so the seedance-interview folder contains SKILL.md.
- 2Place the reference files. Make sure the directors-read, interview-starters, pro-filmmaking-standards and cinematography-shot-language reference files sit at the paths SKILL.md links to.
- 3Install the skill. Move the folder into ~/.claude/skills/ for all projects or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder, or upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills in the Claude apps.
- 4Describe your idea. Ask in plain words for help turning a video idea into a Seedance 2.0 prompt, and say whether you have no idea yet, a rough concept, or precise shot direction.
- 5Answer the questions and use the prompt. Reply to the batch of questions in one message, or say choose for me. Copy the finished prompt into the Seedance 2.0 video generation service.
What the seedance-interview skill makes the agent do
An agent skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file that tells the agent when and how to handle a certain kind of task. When this skill is installed, the agent first works out which kind of starting point you have: no idea yet, a rough idea, or precise professional direction in shots, lenses and blocking.
It then asks short, answerable questions, or offers concrete options with a default, to shape the story, scenes and camera style. Once it has your answers, it converts them into a prompt for the Seedance 2.0 AI video generator, keeping your own words where possible.
- Works out whether you have no idea yet, a rough idea, or professional direction
- Asks up to five numbered questions per message, each with a default if you are not sure
- Offers starting-point directions when you have no concept yet
- Carries your shot, lens and blocking direction into the prompt without simplifying it
- The skill prepares the prompt; the source files do not show a tool that generates the video itself
What you need before you install it
The skill needs the Seedance 2.0 video generation service to use the prompt it produces. The skill file does not specify which service or how to access it, so check that you can run Seedance 2.0 before you rely on the output.
The skill also depends on reference files from the parent seedance-20 repository. The SKILL.md links to four of them: directors-read, interview-starters, pro-filmmaking-standards and cinematography-shot-language. They must be present in the relative location the links point to, or the skill cannot load its guidance.
- Access to the Seedance 2.0 video generation service
- The four reference files from the seedance-20 repository, kept at the paths SKILL.md links to
- An agent that supports skills, such as Claude with its skills feature or Claude Code with a skills folder
Install the seedance-interview skill
Download the ZIP of the skill from the skill page on this site and unzip it. The folder must contain the SKILL.md file. Then choose one of two install locations.
For a personal install that applies to all your projects, place the unzipped folder inside ~/.claude/skills/. To limit it to one project, place it inside that project's .claude/skills/ folder instead.
If you use the Claude apps rather than a folder on your computer, open Settings, go to Capabilities, and upload the skill under Skills.
- Personal install: ~/.claude/skills/seedance-interview/
- Project install: .claude/skills/seedance-interview/ inside your project
- Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills → upload
~/.claude/skills/seedance-interview/SKILL.mdTrigger the skill with a natural request
You do not need a special command. The skill's description tells the agent to use it when you want creative guidance, story development, scene planning or a director interview for a Seedance 2.0 idea. Describe what you want in ordinary words and say you want help building the video or prompt.
You can say how much you already know. If you have no idea yet, say so and ask for suggestions. If you have a rough concept, describe it in a sentence or two. If you already think in shots and lenses, state that directly and the agent will switch to a precise intake using your vocabulary.
- "I want a short Seedance 2.0 video but I don't know what it should be. Help me come up with one."
- "I have a rough idea: a fox looking at a city at night. Help me turn it into a Seedance 2.0 prompt."
- "I'm a filmmaker. I want a 35mm-style medium shot with a slow push-in. Help me build a precise Seedance 2.0 brief."
How the interview works
For a plain idea, the agent asks up to five core questions in one batch so you can answer them together. The questions cover the star of the video, what happens, where and when it happens, what the viewer should feel, and where it will be watched. Each question has a default, so replying 'not sure' is a valid answer and the agent will pick one for you.
If you give a single clip idea, the agent assumes one clip and does not ask about sequences or continuations. When the idea is already a longer story or you mention a part two, it may also ask about sequence questions. If you already gave precise direction, the agent records it as you wrote it and fills only the gaps.
- Answer in your own words; the agent keeps them and translates them into camera language internally
- Say 'surprise me' or 'choose for me' to let the agent select a direction
- The interview runs in the language you use
Safety notes: scripts and network
The skill's file set does not run scripts and does not use the network, according to the listing. It is a set of instructions and reference files that shape the agent's responses. You should still review the SKILL.md and reference files you install, as with any skill.
The skill is released under the MIT licence, as stated in its metadata.
- Runs scripts: no
- Uses network: no
- Licence: MIT
Tips for better results
Give the agent the strongest concrete noun you have, such as a person, animal, product or place, because the star of the video is one of the first things it needs. Keep your own phrases, such as 'swooshy' or 'dreamy', since the skill preserves them.
If you already know your shot size, lens or camera move, state it exactly in your first message. The skill is built to honour that direction rather than replace it. If you only need a one-line prompt quickly, skip the interview and ask for that directly, since the interview adds several rounds of questions.
- Name one clear subject and one visible change from start to end
- Use your own words for mood and style
- State professional direction once and exactly
- Choose a default when you are unsure rather than leaving a question blank
What people use it for
- Turning a half-formed feeling about a video into a concrete story and scene plan before generating a clip
- Developing a short single-clip concept with one clear subject and one visible change
- Carrying a filmmaker's stated shot size, lens and blocking into a precise Seedance 2.0 prompt
- Choosing between a few brief-specific creative directions when you have no concept yet
Frequently asked questions
How do I install the seedance-interview skill?
Download the ZIP from the skill page, unzip it, and place the seedance-interview folder in ~/.claude/skills/ for all projects or in a project's .claude/skills/ folder. In the Claude apps, you can instead upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
Is the seedance-interview skill free?
The skill is released under the MIT licence, as stated in its metadata. The source does not list prices for the Seedance 2.0 video generation service, so check that service's own terms.
What do I need to use the seedance-interview skill?
You need access to the Seedance 2.0 video generation service and the four reference files from the seedance-20 repository: directors-read, interview-starters, pro-filmmaking-standards and cinematography-shot-language. Those files must be at the paths SKILL.md links to.
Does the skill generate the video itself?
No. The skill only prepares the prompt. The file set does not show a generation tool, so you need to paste the prompt into the Seedance 2.0 video generation service yourself.
Why does the agent keep asking questions when I only want a quick prompt?
The interview is designed to add several rounds of questions to shape the story and camera style. If you only need a one-line prompt quickly, ask for that directly instead of invoking the interview.
What should I do if the skill does not load its guidance?
Check that the reference files directors-read, interview-starters, pro-filmmaking-standards and cinematography-shot-language are present at the relative paths that SKILL.md links to. The skill depends on them.

Our verdict
Use this skill if you have a vague video idea and want help shaping it into a story and scene plan, or if you are a filmmaker who wants your shot, lens and blocking direction carried into a precise Seedance 2.0 prompt. Pick something else if you only need a quick one-line prompt, or if you expect the skill itself to render the video.
